Single Parent Tax Credit

    Hello Everyone,

I have been a single parent since 2008 but just started working full time on August 2010 until present. I am planning to move in with my boyfriend summer this year. My question is if I would be eligible to claim one parent tax credit backdated from August 2010 until the full year of 2011? I am not interested to claim this year's tax credit as I know I won't qualify for it since I will be moving in with my bf.

    Thanks in advance.

So long as you meet the criteria, you can claim it for 2010, 2011 and 2012. It is only of benefit to you if you have paid or are paying tax.

Thanks. Yes, so far, since I haven't move in with my bf yet, I met all the criteria. I just wonder though if I claim it now, should I tell to the Revenue that I will be moving in with someone later this year or just wait until I moved in with him first before telling them. Honestly, I just recently found out about the tax credit. Didn't realize I could qualify for it but since there are some future plans on cohabiting with my boyfriend, I am not sure if I would be question for that. The last thing I want to happen is to get some penalties.

When you cease to be eligible for the credit, just inform Revenue so it can be removed from the following tax year. Or you could just login to your online account and remove it yourself in the first week of January.

You are entitled to the OPFTC from the date your kid was born .

I just heard about this tax credit. My partner and I had a child in August 2010. We were living together at the time. For one reason or another (i.e. big argument!!) she moved out from November 2010 until mid-February 2011. We got back together eventually and now we are married. Am I entitled to claim this relief for 2010, 2011 or both? Do I have to prove I wasn't cohabiting and had access to the child? If so, how? They hardly just take your word for it, or do they? Thanks for any advice!!

I only found that out in the last year. Never lived with my DM or had relationship. When she was 8 I got sole custody and applied then for single parent tax allowance. She is now 14. AFAIK I can only claim back five years so 8 years of tax allowance gone
