Skoda Octavia 1.6 vs 1.9

    Hey All!

Have been doing a bit of car shopping and am now very close to buying a new motor.

I currently have an 06 Octavia 1.9 which ive managed to put over 330,000 km on it! I want to stay with Skoda as they have served me well, only causing me problems in the last few months.

My question is this, im finding it hard to locate the Elegance spec 1.9tdi engines as the 1.6 seem to be the new common engine. I know the 1.9 has more Torque and is better in Fifth, but just wondering if there are any owners of the 1.6 here and what their experiences are of it.

    Thanks!

    SD

The 1.6 diesel develops the same amount of torque as the 1.9. It's available slightly earlier so it's torque band is actually wider than the 1.9

Both engines have almost identical outputs
The 1.9 is either all or nothing
the 1.6 is more progressive as said above so you done feel the initial grunt like you do in the 1.9.
They only way for you is to try get one out for a weekend and drive it.

FWIW I have a Superb Greenline - the 1.6 is matched to a 5 speed box making it a lot more driveable than, say, the 1.6td Passat with the 6 speed box. It boils down to the overall package so I'd agree that a drive in a new Octavia would be the best way to judge. I don't think that you'll be disappointed coming from a 1.9.

had experience with both and while we experienced some turbo lag with the 1.6, nothing like that with the 1.9. both new models.

I have a 2011 caddy 1.6 and it is a very capable engine even for a van carrying a load....however it had an intercooler replaced already, dont know if this is a common problem or if I was just unlucky.

Don't like the newer 1.6, think it's soft. Lot of warranty issues as well.

Any links about the warranty issues?

It's a fact of life, but the newer smaller engines won't live to the mileage of older generation ones. They are too highly strung, and they are more complex.

I haven't checked, but us the 1.9 still available ? I though it was phased.out, tbh......I'd find a 1.9 if I were you, and buy it. Higher spec, even.

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
