    Recent Consumer Association Survey: http://corporate.nca.ie/eng/Research_Zone/price-surveys/cost-of-solicitors-ireland.html

"In relation to taking out a grant of probate, the national average fee reported by the solicitors surveyed in response to the scenario was €2,767. The lowest price quoted, €950, was recorded in the Munster region and the highest price, €6,150, was recorded in the Rest of Leinster area, a difference of €5,200."

    Lesson, shop around.

After a grandparent died the spouse was charged 13000 euro. Was told it was a percentage of the value of the house. Also the previous solicitor in the same firm had never registered the house and there was a slight complication. Even though it was the same firm always used. Told my grandparent she ought to be grateful because they took 500euro off.

You can use any solicitor you want or if its not complicated and you have the time you can do it yourself with the help of the Probate Office. Check all this out before agreeing anything. But also check exactly what the solicitor is charging for - some of it may be taxes or charges rather than fees. You gotta get on top of this.

As with everything shop round and go with the second cheapest quote.

Not forgetting that you can do personal probate and ignore all such quotes.

OP, I was given a 'good rate' by a solicitor 'friend' who quoted based on a % of the value of the estate. I told him to p**s off and did it myself, thereby saving about 6K.
