Job/college preventing people from playing GAA

I am suffering from this and I am sure I am not the only one.

I haven't played with my club seriously since Minor level (almost more than 3 years ago) due to college and work. I am a corkonion but had to move to galway for college. For this reason I have been unable to properly play GAA with my club back home. Now I have recently taken a job in ennis which will also prevent me from playing with the club as it would simply be unfeesable to drive up and down for training sessions more than once a week. And if I dont attend training there is no way I can be considered for the squad. The best I could hope for in the past few years is to play a bit during the summer months but at that stage it is very hard to make any team as I haven't been around all year. I still have a massive interest in GAA so this frustrates me that i cant actually play anymore.

I am sure this has been a problem for many irish people in the recent years as people have to move further a field for jobs and college or whatever else. I would be very interested to hear from other people who have/had the same issues.

We have three lads - all teachers - working in England, as there is no work at home. All three played Under 21 for Armagh, so from the Club perspective, their loss to us is huge.

We took the view that it's better for them to be playing football whilst away (with the hope that they eventually return), so we were happy to agree to transfers to Clubs in England.

    I know the feeling OP

I had to quit my club after minor when I went to college and always felt that I'd go back in my early 20s but I'm now 34 and due to always continuously doing exams, it's just too late for me to go back playing and I regret it immensely at this stage.

That said, I'm finishing my final exams this year and hope to join my local club and help out with mentoring underage teams.

croker, would it not be possible to transfer to a local team in Ennis - a lot of lads have had to do that. If you are living in Ennis, then you can transfer to the club nearby - if you end up going back near home, you can transfer back to your original club. At least that way, you can play and train properly with a team, instead of wasting it playing bit parts with your home team.

Transfer to a club near you. Im sure our old club wont object because 1. you are not joining a rival and 2. you cant play for them anyway. I know it is not ideal and it is difficult to leave the club you have played for all your life and you have an attachment to it, but if you are living in Ennis and will be spending most of your time their for the foreseeable future, you should join a local club, get to know local people and try to be happy there. You can always return to your old club should you be lucky enough to move closer to home in the future. Loyalty to your own club is very important but there is nothing wrong with joining another club if you are too far away to play with them.
