Where does Motorcheck etc get its mileage readings from?

It says source:INMR, but what does this mean exactly? I find on alot of the reports the mileage or km reading is a number like 50000km or 89000miles which seems dodgy if the reading can be taken when a car is brought to garage etc as it makes it looked clocked. Do these websites use user inputs on other car checking websites that have been entered in when checking out the car?

Firstly, your about 5 years behind with that. Secondly, it does not say where it gets its information. Please don't post useless responses.

"The Irish National Mileage Register (INMR), an online database designed to record the odometer reading of any vehicle registered in the Republic of Ireland celebrated its launch today."

If this means that anything entered into a carcheck website is recorded, then it is a stupid system. If I wanted to sell a clocked car I could just do a couple of car checks with different mileage and clock the car to what I input last in the website. If it was coming from a garage/nct then it might make sense.

Sure it does, did you even look at the inmr site?

Is it possible to check if a digital odometer has been changed?
Could you connect up to the ODB with diagnostic software & link cable yourself or maybe bring the car to a dealer?
Or is the ROM / Memory just wiped clean when the car is clocked?

The only way I know they record mileages is at NCT. Possibly at the time of an accident, if there was one. Would be recorded when paying VRT for imports.

That article was quoting a source in motorcheck so the data was of highly dubious accuracy since it's in their interests to scare the bejaysus out of us, same as what the PC antivirus companies used to get up to before the media cottoned on to their cynical tactics - remember the BS about the Michaelangelo virus?

Paper won't refuse ink. Look at the source of the data before accepting it as fact and apply a good dash of cynicism if it's someone from the industry with an axe to grind or a product to sell.

It is recorded here. I bought a car few years back with 130K on the clock, and when I brought it in for NCT the guy told me that last NCT this car's mileage was 330K......

Once again; The NCT do NOT share odometer readings with these private vehicle history check companies.

    Data Protection Act etc etc..

Do a search on this forum for more info...this question comes up almost weekly.

Why can you not use data from the last NCT test? Is there a barrier to sourcing this information.

Thanks for your question, it is one that we get all the time. You are correct that one source of mileage data would be the National Car Test (NCT) readings. Cartell has placed pressure on the Government to obtain these readings and will continue to do so. At the moment these readings are not available in bulk to anyone – we feel this should change.
