Car sold but its back on Donedeal Clocked

    Hi all,

Basically I sold my car in January, twas advertised for months on Donedeal & Carzone. The guy was dodgy, but he paid cash and I wanted rid!

My old car has reappeared on donedeal 2 days ago, but its changed a bit since I sold it. The mileage has gone from 161000km down to 74000km

The most worrying thing from my point of view is that my name is still on the log book as it is advertised under my name, and a quick check shows that it is still registered to my home address. A friend of mine enquired and he used my name.

So I went to the guards, and he rang the guy and told him take it down and re register it. The guard told me to go to the tax office/department of envoirnment and get my name taken off the log book which I'm going to do tomorrow.

Where do I stand and what should I do?

Also, I don't want some poor person to buy this car thinking theyve gota a bargain when it is mutton dressed as lamb!

Tommy Vercetti, after all the hijacking and joy riding of cars I think karma has finally caught up with you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,624 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

He was dodgy but you still handed him the cert without posting it off to Shannon, serves you right that he's now using your name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,907 ✭✭✭✭Kristopherus

Why did'nt you send the log book to Shannon?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭johnos1984

    Link the ad here.

Contact donedeal with your email address "hit the report button" and they will be able to compare ads and have it removed with minutes..............even at this time of the night ;)

A similar thing happened another user here about two days ago and the ad was removed once they had his email address

Can you link the ad to warn others here

Wait a second, when selling a car you are meant to take the buyers name and address, fill out the VLC ("log book") and post to Tax Office/Shannon. Not give the VLC to the buyer. Do you hand blank cheques to plumbers and painters too?

Assuming you did this one basic requirement, how would the car be in your name still?

If you did not do this, what did you think would happen if he ran through toll bridges, speed cameras, stole petrol from garage forecourts etc, with it in your name? Sounds like you handed the VLC to someone you identified as dodgy without any common sense at all. You are lucky all he is doing is scamming someone else.

Educate yourself for the next time:

The rest of your post is full of weirdness too:

    - Sold under your name? So what, he is impersonating you on DoneDeal??
    - "Quick check" shows it registered to your address? What quick check are you using to get the address of an owner from a Reg plate?
    - Gardai told you to goto Tax office and remove your name.. what would it be replaced with? I suspect an Affidavit would be required here, but would love to know what the tax office say.

Thanks for all the negitive feedback.

I was straight up when I sold the car. I had the money and he said it was for his wife who was there with him so that why I didnt take the log book.

How easy is it to clock these things? I wouldn't have thought a relatively new car like that could be clocked!

You dont take the log book, its your log book, he took it off you. Also, you gave it to him as he was married and she was there.. what are we missing here?

My first name appears on donedeal.

If you ring him he uses my name.

Sorry, quick check was wrong, my address is not on it.

I'll write up tomorrow with the tax office response.

Clearly, I dont sell cars for a living and I was naive. I brought along a witness with me when I sold it and rang a guard to say I was selling it and he said once I had the money, what about it.

5 minute job, most new digital clocks are easier than the older cars were the clocks have to physically come out and be altered.

Means even the phrase 'full stamped (I presume that's what 'stapled' is supposed to stand for) service history' means sfa these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,678 ✭✭✭ForestFire

The ad says it comes with full stamped service history. If he is using a legitimately service book surey mileage in that so its probable tampered with.

Agree with other users, you should always post change of ownership yourself and ask for id even if its a nun buying it. But you live and learn.

Toyota Auris 07KY5079 (07-KY-5079) Clocked. There, now google will have this as a search result soon enough for this reg....

Hopefully it won't catch too many people out.

I'm just going to be devils advocate and ask have you a picture with you with the car.

This all just seems a bit weird, the story etc and the cars condition.

I'm not saying it isn't clocked but it is possible you are a disgruntled customer.....

    "Very, very small mileage"
"Not like those clocked imported cars"

I'd love to see this scum come undone..... It's time to get a mob together !!!

I also hate that keyword loading sh1te on done deal - he should be rung all night through from private numbers asking about the focus, golf, Astra, fiesta, lime green dildo etc......

And after all it still for sale ???

Seriously, I could link a car and say it was mine and clocked

It's very possible the car is legit and the poster is talking through their hole.

The evidence doesn't stack up to me but I could easily be wrong.........there is no evidence either way apart from a crap ad

This guy is obviously not a scammer, he is the car guru, able to take a pigs ear and turn it into a sows 4rse. I've bought 2 vans recently where the mileage gave me a total chuckle, as did the spas selling them- 98 reg with 48000 miles up! "It just needs tracking mate"! "Only one owner boss"(5 really). I could care less as I wanted them for parts but if you were a normal buyer, total ride. It's a minefield out there.

Not with me in it, but with my son, and partner who I bought the car from.

I was happy to sell it & he got a good price.

I came on for some advice. Thusfar Ive been called an idiot and a liar.

I'd want to be fairly vindictive to post about the ad and try to shoot down the guy selling it.

Jesus johnos your very jumpy. Give the kid a brake. A lot of people sell cars and just hand over the book. If I am handing over a few Gs than I want the book.

If I am handing over a few Gs than I want the book.

Your not entitled to it though and nobody should be handing it over.

I bet if you phoned the number johno would answer:P

It states clearly on the VRC in BOLD writing on the document not to hand it over

I never called the OP an idiot or a liar.

I have merely highlighted how easy it is to come on and say the car is clocked.

We had a case a few days ago where I went to great length to have an ad removed. The difference was it was a known car and the story added up.

The OP was advised, clearly, in my original post how to have it removed quickly.

I'm trying to be unbiased and present both sides as no evidence has been submitted either way.

As it's a public forum anyone who searches the car and see references to it being clocked may be mislead and the seller may unfairly miss out on a sale

Thats the way it should happen. with a lot of trust thrown in.
What if you handed me the cash, I handed over the keys. than I dont post it off and report my car stolen.

You'll get charged with filing a false report as I'd have a receipt signed by you.

If you didn't post it you'd also have a number of parking tickets and speeding fines to explain

Its very suspicious though. Google the phone number on the advert and the fellow is using several different names. Why do that? Seems that he is trying to hide something imo.

It could well be clocked or have done 100 miles on it's roof.

There is also a lot of cracks in the OP's story IMHO

    I know :D

Even if it was me looking at the car, the multiple aliases of the seller would be ringing alarm bells in my head. I'd look elsewhere.

It's a team of 4 people and in fairness they watch regularly on boards.

they will most likely reply after 8:30am in the morning.

You will most likely hear from Megan..............in my mind she is the perfect girl for some reason.............and NO I don't know Megan or work for Donedeal :)
