Between A Separation being arguably the best movie of last year, and This Is Not A Film looking to be an early contender this year, Iran is doing something right. Anyone else think it's the movie capital of the world right now? If not, which country beats it and why?

Kayvan Novak is from there too and he's a bloody genius.

In terms of quality, yes. You obviously don't agree.

You can hardly call it the movie capital of the world based on one great film and another that has yet to be released.

I think it's hard to call any one country the definitive "movie capital" of the world considering that when it comes to foreign cinema we only get the best of the best. We never see Japan's answer to Jack and Jill or Spain's Meet the Spartans.

There is no doubt that Iran is one of the more interesting countries producing films atm but they are a long way off of being the worlds best.

This Is Not a Film has already been released. It's an amazing movie that does so much while doing so little and for my money was even better than A Separation.

Yeah but at the same time, I can only go on what I've seen. And I would hope that no other country has an answer to Jack & Jill! Since we only get the best of the best from Iran then why not compare it to Hollywood's best of the best? And everywhere else's best of the best.

Secondly, you never gave an answer. Easy to criticise, harder to offer an answer.

Thirdly, it's just a bit of fun.

Better than A Separation? Now I'm excited. Did you not enjoy A Separation, or was TINAF just so good that it surpassed it?

Forgot that it was released at the start of the month, sadly for those of us outside Dublin we haven't yet got a chance to see the film though I was told that there are plans to screen it in Galway. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

While you can only form an opinion based on what you have seen, to call any country the best in the world based on just one film just seems a little ridiculous. Every country has their fair share of abysmal trash that's as bad as the worst that Hollywood offers.

It's hard to give an answer tbh, so far this year American cinema has been impressing the hell out of me and right now I'd properly say that the American independent scenes is producing the most interesting cinema around.

Must admit ive heard of neither movie, but i enjoyed No One Knows About Persian Cats when I saw it a couple of years back. I have been meaning to check out more of Iranian cinema & since the movies you mentioned above seem to have rave reviews amongst users of this forum I shall look forward to checking them out.

Yeah I might have indulged in a bit of hyperbole to draw attention (as noted by the pedantic poster above), but I think it'd be worth your while. Beats Transformers anyway.
