    Hi folks

Just wondering if anyone has any info in regards martial arts classes in the Ballymun area for kids (Son is almost 10 and Daughter almost 11).

Kids already do Taekwando but I was looking for something better and their classes split to Finglas every so often, which isn't easy to get too by foot (no car) as we've a small baby also.

Would love for them to learn Jeet Kune Do for example.

    Thanks

Don't be worrying about them learning jeet kune do

theres a tkd in the swimming pool complex as well as up in poppintree..or at least there's always kids running around in doboks. There's shotokan up in poppintree and some kind of kung fu as well I think

there's two boxing clubs in Ballymun too.

Try Dublin Thai Boxing, Darrens mafia run the streets out that way :)

Thanks. I know Darren, he's a nice lad, I don't want them doing boxing though, Thai or otherwise. Any of the grappling types just won't interest them either.
My Son is already bored of the Taekwando pattern stuff they have to do in order to grade, we're trying to keep them interested but they just want to learn, fight and compete and I want them to learn better self defense and the discipline of same - they're not getting that in Taekwando.

I wouldn't rule out trying different stuff without giving it a go. My kids (girls 8 & 12) did Karate for a year and got a bit bored, but the elder one loved boxing and I'm pretty sure they'd both enjoy grappling (which doesn't look so cool, but is great craic actually doing it). If they haven't tried it, grappling can look a bit daunting, but IMO it's 100% worth trying for kids. At a younger age it's all about the teacher, the pace of the class and other people in the class, and much less about style. I'm not gone on the whole grading thing for kids, I reckon its a bit of a racket.

Can I ask folks what's the story with Judo for kids ? I know it's grappling and so on but seems to be a very competitive sport, which I think would be worth a try, see how they take to it.
Any Judo clubs or trainers around the Ballymun area willing to take on two well mannered competitive kids?

We have Taekwon-Do in Setanta GAA also if you're interested. ITF style similar to kickboxing not like the style they would have done previous.

Thanks Yomchi. Yes we've heard of the one in Setanta. They're currently doing the Taekwondo (is it wtf version?) in the Trinity comp.
What times/days do you folks run things at in Setanta?
Do you guys take part in competitions etc too ? I ask as the kids love that part of it, gives them something extra to train for.

Yeah it's a bit much of a walk for us all, especially as it's normally evening time classes are on and it's Ireland, where it's always raining :) thanks though.
We'll be driving all going well later in the year, which will give us more options for them.
They were interested in trying out the Judo in DCU, still a fair aul walk in the rain but we'll contact them later in the week and see if they take kids on etc

The missus brought them to the Bjj class in the kyuzo gym today and they both loved it, looks like they're both going to take that up on the Saturday mornings.
Thanks for that info again "youllneverknow", apologies if my little lad is a bit of a messer at times :)

Thanks for the kind words and don't worry, there's plenty of messers in there to keep him company!
