Cause of Damage?

The missus is just back from work and showed me the damage she noticed this morning on the car, the wing mirror was hanging a bit loose and then noticed the rest of the damage to the paint, are we looking at some wayward branches over night due to the high wind or possibly a wheelie bin? That's the only thing I noticed this morning that the wind had got hold of.

Car isn't worth much but it makes it look horrible , any way this was done by a car or another vehicle?

 You sure it wasn't tipped over on its side?

Doesn't look like it was caused by branches to me and certainly not a wheelie bin or another car.

That's the first thing I though

Scratches look too high for it to be a wheelie bin. It's also strange that the scratches on the b pillar are at angles to each other.

That's just weird man. Very geometric and selective branches?

That car was on its side

Seen the same sort of scaring on a bike that was down.

Who tips a car and then rights it again before the owner sees it? stranger and stranger!

Other then the fact that I'm sure TT would be aware of it, I would have said it was on its side for certain.

And the damage is right on the points that would contact the ground:confused::confused:

Perhaps a large sign or similar blew against it before blowing away?

Did you use one of those hideous drive through brush washes recently?

How long has she had the car?

My guess is that a sheet of metal roofing material or similar came loose in the wind and blew by yours on its travels,
if it was folded over and in an inverted V shape, it would explain the scratches at 2 different angles on the pillar.

If it was on its side, would the mirror not have been broken off?

    It could have folded in

We didn't say it definitely was on its side, just that that what it looks like. The mirror is broken though.

Assuming that the car wasn't turned over onto a flat abrasive surface, then it had to have had a large abrasive surface hit it.

Mirror is "hanging a bit loose" according to the OP and photos seem to bear that out. Can't really call it broken.
As you say it had to be an abrasive surface if not turned on its side so could possibly have brushed gently against a wall.

A wall would have scraped lower down the body, along the side and wheel arches etc.

Those scratches are from something scraping along the car like below:

Please excuse very quick paint edited pic:P

Has to have been something fairly light though, otherwise there would be dents as well.

A UFO picked it up and let it fall along its side while flying through the air :pac:

Fat drunk bird with a sparkly dress possibly used it to support herself while walking home.

I know I've used cars, signs, fences, trees and the ground in the past to help me on my way

One more, too tight a turn in a multi storey car park?

Anything is possible, I would imagine it would have more damage.

Nope, car rarely gets washed and when it does it's by me with the mitt and 2 bucket method.

I bought it about 7/8 years ago.

was it parked on the road side half on the kerb?

depending on the height of the kerb it may account for only the top half getting scratched by something driving past?

I do have quite a chunky neighbour tbh.

That would make sense but you'd think the scratches would be parallel to the road if a vehicle shaved too close??
And the scratches appear to have been made in two passes giving opposite angles..

Does it have the very same white scratch at the outside tip of the mirror??

Felt from a flat roof blown past in the wind?

Not meaning to cast dispertions on your wife but is there any chance she is hiding something from you? Maybe she hit something during the day but didnt want to admit it to you?

Thank god somebody said it !! It was the first thing I thought of :p

    My bets are:

    1. Did the wife catch in something
    2. Could it have happened where she works and didn't notice it on passenger side of car..
    3. Nope that's it... i don't buy the wind blew somthing against it, can't see how the wind caused that scratch pattern, then again I'm the suspicious type:(

My thoughts exactly. but the actually pattern of the scratches is too precise to be poor driving in a multi storey and some of the other suggestions.

the marks are "vertical" looking instead of horizontal...and you would expect a "drag" horizontal look if she (or someone else) drove into it?

I am going with the UFO - alien type or type related to stormy weather today.

    😎

She's not the wife yet! She's assured me she doesn't know anything about how it happened. She went out of her way to find someone she bumped into in a car park before so I'd have no reason to doubt her.I'm thinking UFO at this stage aswell :)
