Great review here in today's Irish Times of the new M5. The piece details the enormous money that will be contributed to the Irish economy by the few people that will buy one, and is an antidote to the usual Irish begrudgery towards new/big car owners.

Quoted for mobile readers; mods remove if Sean Sherlock wouldn't approve:
No he would not. Don't do that again.

He makes a good point though, the price the government takes on large, fast cars is a scandal. They are national heros!

I'm into cars, not schoolboy economics.

How much of that tax and fuel is written off against his tax bill though?

I've had one new M5 park across the road from me since the start of Jan.

I was out in a relatives on Monday and another 12D M5 parked across the road. The owner apparently bought a house on the road worth €450000 that needed about the same to modernise. There is still money in the economy for some people!

Went to have a look at the car and take a big but got caught rapid so left with my tail between my legs.

You'd have to wonder what kind of salary you would have to earn to be able to comfortably live life, support a family and a home and everything else in life and then be able to comfortably run a new M5.

Now, for someone who is actually buying it for themselves with a loan.

€135,000 euro initial investment. (Think of interest on the loan as well).

Depreciation of, lets say at least €70,000 in three years.

The tax of almost €7,000 comes in as a drop in the ocean at this point.

Then you have fuel, insurance, servicing etc. to look after?

There's a difference to begrudge someone for owning one and for being jealous, i'd be the latter to an extent.

Salary, I would guess 200k per year with no dependents and renting or 300k with family and home, as minimums to buy new.
As you state, the "cost of entry" drops dramatically within 3years and continues to plummet. Certainly a rather poor way of using money IMO.

indeed, but each to their own, and if i was earning that kind of money i'd most certainly be buying something new.

Hence why i walk around pointing at cars and saying "i'll have you in a few years".

Just wish the few years for that A7 would pass a bit quicker :L

I think an M5 is one of only two modern German cars that I'd own....but an E39 M5 would be my choice...so no need for 200k plus a year:P

That and a 911 would be my two choices from Germany. Well that an Panzer IV but that would be more of a weekend runaround.

    Meh,

Audi RS6 avant(RS4 might make it too) would be my other choice....if I ever got either though....they'd have all M/RS badges removed.
