I found out just this week that I'm not being kept on after the internship ends. I'm quite disappointed but not the end of the world. Just wondering if anybody here who has faced the same situation thought the JobBridge scheme helped afterwards,ie much luck with interviews etc ?

I'd expect that the majority of JobBridge internships lead to no full-time job with another similar JobBridge internship starting at the company some time afterwards. If you had a "proper" internship then I'd expect it to help you at interview, if you can find jobs to apply for.

Thats quite true. They will probably get another intern after I leave !

Sadly this seems to be whats happening.

On one hand the intern is getting experience, in admin positions for example with software packages that they may not be familiar with which could help them get work.

On the other hand, if they're taking on another intern soon after then the internships are replacing a paid employee which is meant to be against the 'rules' of the scheme.

I know some companies are getting a work experience via FAS then simply get another when they leave. It means they are getting free labour when they should in fact be hiring AND PAYING someone. No wonder there are so many people unemployed!

Hi Wexfordia. I'm more or less in a similar situation as I have been told that it's unlikely that a permanent position will be available. I am heading into the 8th month of the internship now. Haven't started the job hunting process officially but I'm confident I'll get something in my field as I have gained great experience from the internship. I'll post back if I have any luck! :)

To be fair I've picked up some good experience/skills which can only add to the cv. I do feel a bit vunerable on JobBridge though.

Bear in mind a lot of unemployed people are highly skilled. Their unemployment statue is due to lack of job not lack of skills.

However, all additional skills and experience can only help.

    nice

I'm just saying that all unemployed people are NOT bums who never worked a day in their lives. I knew engineers with over 10 years experience, who have never been out of work but who are now unemployed for example (highly educated and highly skilled). Obviously there are dole bums never worked EVER but it's unfair to claim all unemployed people are like this.

I did a Job Bridge internship and I knew it would never lead to a paid job. They'd been through a busy time and a backlog of work had built up, which I helped clear. I knew the company budget wouldn't sanction paying another wage so I was happy to see out my internship and take as much as I could from it. However, another position came up in the company and I applied for it. It was advertised internally and externally but I had the advantage of being familiar with their procedures, systems etc. If I hadn't been interning there my CV would have just got lost in the mountain of applications that came in and I'd probably still be out of work

Just to update if anyone is still following this thread. I was able to get a job through my JobBridge experience. Seems that if you get experience in a good area (mine was in Digital Marketing) employers will be more than happy to look at you.

My tip would be to apply for the jobs to apply for jobs that ask for more than 1 years experience. If you should a good aptitude for the type of work and a good knowledge of the area you are in, they may be willing to overlook lack of experience. Oh.. and carpet bomb recruitment websites with your CV! :)
