nothing official as of yet, and there won't be until about a week before its launch. It will follow the same trend as always for its release, though.

That is very debatable! Personally think the 4s is 10 times better phone than the Desire.

What are you expecting on the 5 that will make it class?

It'll have number 5 on the box rather than 4s. Usually about first week of june at the WDC is when it's announced. I'd imagine it'd be announced then, but it probably won't launch here till mid-end july. Like the 3G and the 4

Well the desire HD came out before the 4s but what I'm saying is that the iPhone 4s isnt worth the upgrade until the iPhone 5 is out.

Well the iphone 5really must produce something that outclasses the proposed Samsung galaxy S3 and the htc one. Hopefully they have a bigger screen for a start.

Hopefully not. iPhone is perfect size for those who dont want to carry a mini tablet in their pocket like the route alot of phones are going for. Meh.

    +1.

Phones with large screens are plain ugly. I remember a few years ago when the aim of phone companies was to make the smallest possible phone, it is now going the other way again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

+1 for screensize remaining the same. The reason it is this size is so that the average person can access any part of the screen with their thumb while operating it one handed. Any bigger will make one handed use awkward, if not impossible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭DjTaz

+1 as well. I can do everything i need to on the iphone with the screen the size it is - I have an iphone 4 and and iphone 4s and the speed difference is noticable in the 4s when im doing anything on it.

The lads in work have the HTC's and the screen is just a little too big for my liking - it makes it bulky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Tea 1000

I disagree on the screen size, I find the iPhone screen too small, and I never liked the change in shape from the 3GS. Lots of rumors that the new 5 will be back to that kind of shape again, and I hope that's true. It's a lot nicer to hold. Plus there's a lot of wastage in the iPhone case size versus screen size ratio. A nicer shape that's naturally easier to hold could allow for the phone to be very slightly wider, then just push the screen size bigger while leaving the rest alone and you'd have a good device.
I agree with OP, the 4S isn't worth the upgrade, SIRI isn't much good in this part of the world yet, it'll take time to mature, so I'd say hold out.
Chances are slim of the 5 being released in June though. I'd say more like end of July, August direction.

There are already Chinese copies of the supposed iphone 5 out that have the iphone 3 curved shape with similar dimensions to the iphone 4

I certainly don't want a much bigger phone, but I want a bigger screen. Either use up more of the current space for screen, or make it slightly bigger. Say 4" would be a nice size.

I love the current design. The whole surface being a screen would be very nice though, although I don't find the current screen size limiting at all. To be honest I can't really see anything I want to change on my 4. It's a bit slow at some things but that's only because I never restart it and it has about 200mb free space on it. I don't miss how quick it was when I first got it. Siri is something I would never use, too. Am I the only one that wants apple to make an iPhone which I can drop without instinctively just accepting the fact that when I go to pick it up the screen WILL be broken...

They're going to make it 2mm thinner and people are going to put on massive rubber cases like they do now. cygnett-workmate.jpg

Apple didn't set anything in stone about that date being the norm for iphone releases. I think they could just as easily release a new iPhone during the summer.

Personally I would like to see a small increase in screen size and a bit slimmer.
I do love the build quality of the iPhone 4 compared to SG2 that I had for awhile.

I have had all the iphones from first aluminium backed one up to 4s and never had one dropped call and that is with 3 different providers.
Maybe I am one of the lucky ones..;)

Larger screen please, I'm finding typing lately a pain in the ass on the iPhone. Truth be told, my ideal frankenphone would be one with a slide out QWERTY keyboard and iOS, but to date the only way I've been able to do that so far was with a boxwave keyboard buddy case until that packed up.

There's good speculation that the next handset will use the Liquid Metal process Apple paid for a few years back, it'd allow them to more or less mould a metal back the same way they can with a plastic one. Something that echo's the Droid RAZR's 7mm thin case would be sweet.

There's been some speculation that they will make the screen taller but keep the current width. The argument for this is that apps tend to scroll up to down rather than left to right, so it wouldn't be too hard for developers to adapt their apps, many of which are resolution independent anyway. This would also allow Apple to keep the phone the same size and just use up some of the free space at the top and bottom of the phone. The Verge made the case for this with mock ups here.

Others have argued that this would be too messy, suggesting Apple will instead keep the current aspect ratio and simply make the screen larger, expanding to the edges and making the phone a little bit wider. The advantage of this is that developers wouldn't have to change their apps. Good case made for this here. And here's the mock up:

WWDC has been announced for June and will be focusing on iOS and OS X. This suggests Apple won't announce the new iPhone until September/October again.

Just rumours, but apparently the iWatch might be making an appearance later in the year - especially with the offerings from Sony, Pebble and I'm Watch hitting the market. An article I read yesterday made reference to Steve J really liking the idea of an iWatch, and that there were some concepts thrown about 2 years ago, but nothing came of it at the time.

Mine was dropping calls with Vodafone on 4.3.3/04.10.01 but since updating to iOS 5 I've been fine.

I don't think it's going to be called the iPhone 5 either, since the 4S technically is the fifth release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,784 ✭✭✭TBi

It will be the "new iPhone" :D

And it could be iPhone 5. The 4S is technically version 4.5, just as the 3GS came after 3G but before the 4 (I know the 4 was technically the fourth generation...).

    Why do you say that?

Because otherwise they'd probably be announcing it at WWDC like they did previously. I mean, sure, they could call an iPhone event a month later, but it's unlikely.

With the iPhone 4s selling so well I cannot see them bringing out a new phone out so early! They'll hang on as long a possible before replacing it.

I'm all for a slightly bigger screen.

Another diagonal half-inch isn't going to make my pocket complain and is still not even in the ball park of tablet size.

    And a radio. :(

I highly doubt it will be released this summer anymore.

According a friend who works for Apple, Apple have told all staff that they can't take holidays for the last 2 weeks in August, all of September and the first 2 weeks of October. This could indicate an October launch like the 4S. This was also the case for the 6 weeks before the launch of the new ipad.

So a period of 8 weeks that a huge staff force can't take leave because of a product launch!

Can't imagine that, nor can I imagine that it's legal either.

Anyhow, Sep/Oct Launch makes more sense as the 4s is only out 6 months.

It's certainly legal, it's more or less totally up to the employer to specify when leave can be taken. A lot of companies define set periods when everyone must take their leave for instance. As long as people aren't prevented from taking their leave altogether during the year, Apple could define numerous leave blackout periods as they see fit.

I think the iPhone 4 design is nice but yes it is bulky. The iPhone 3GS design is dog ugly though and a step way back in terms of design.
People the world over are bitching about the screen size and I think it will go
4 inches. The screen is too small and 4.3" (galaxy s2) is the sweet spot.
You'll have to adapt because all phone screens are getting bigger. If Apple reduces the bezel hugely, there won't be any problems texting or whatever else.

There will be only two possible release dates, June or October.
August/September is when the macs/iPods get updated.

Clearly you don't get design. The 3GS was nice for its time but it is nowhere near as sleek and premium feeling as the iP4.
The iPhone 4 was a big leap forward and the galaxy s2 is just as nice as the 4 but it's thinner and the bezel is also thinner so I think in some ways it's better.
I'd still take the 4 over it because of its premium build/look.
The screen is too small. Mark my words, it won't stay that small for long. It could go to nearly 4" but the point is, all the competition is going bigger and thinner so eventually the market demand will change on Apple.
Look around on the internet to when the 4S was released, one of the main complaints was screen size didn't get bigger.
I'm sure the next iPhone will have a nicer design than the 4 but if it goes the 3GS route, I'd find it hard to upgrade my iPhone 4.

I think it's very simple for me.
I see all the other android etc phones that are out there,
Yes some screens are nice etc but by a million miles the build quality and feel of the iPhone is far superior .
Saying that I feel I new design is needed with a slightly bigger screen and slimmer device but remain the build quality.

The thing I hate about the samsung galaxy s2 is that for a class phone it has a real cheap plastic feel about it. IPhone wins on that department.

there is no way apple would announce to their employees there's a black out period this early. also who's to say it's for the iphone? the blackout could be for the back to school period where apple always announce new ipod's and get rid of old stock by flogging them with new computers.

Yeah I agree with you there, thats why I said overall I like my iPhone 4 better.
But I do like the thinness and shape of it though, if only it were made of better looking/quality materials.

True but times change. Phone designs are like fashion, they will always evolve and never go back from a better design to a lesser one.

If Apple doesn't respond to the competition, then how the hell are they supposed to remain competitive? People only blindly buy products out of brand loyalty for so long if the product its self doesn't match or exceed the competition.

You need to calm down, I'm not saying Samsung is better overall but I like the way they are taking things from a design point of view. If it weren't for the fact that android isn't for me, I would consider buying one.

Granted Apple did innovate them but that doesn't mean they will be market leaders for ever because of that. Look at Sony's downfall as an example.

And I'm just talking about the external(design aspects of the iPhone), the hardware and software are of very high quality so that alone is why people upgraded so readily to the 4S.
I know loads of people who have iPhones and say that the screen is quite small and that overall it is on the thick side, so I think I'm justified in wanting a better product for my money.
If Apple doesn't "innovate" and evolve their product when the competition is going above and beyond (not talking software) then they will eventually lose my money and other customers also. But for the time being, I'm very happy with my iPhone and I think the sum of all the parts makes it better than android to me. That could change down the line though...

To me the iPhone 4 is a better looking device. Eronomically though, I'd say the 3GS would be more comfortable.
But I prefer form over function!;)

It's all up to personal preference at the end of the day but if they go back to this design, I won't buy it.

design is a subjective matter, its not like measuring processor speeds, megapixels etc where you can clearly say one is better/greater than the other - design is a personal preference...

IMO iphone 4 is a much classier design than the 3gs.
3gs seems dated while the 4 is all very minimal and has a solid build.
i've dropped mine over and over (from about a metre high) and its in perfect shape.

i think i read somewhere that apple dont listen to consumers - they tell consumers what they want.

while i would like a bigger screen i dont want to lose the solid build and feel.
i carry my iphone in my back pocket most of the time so often sit on it without any worries - i feel that if i sat on a S2 it would split in half, it just feels too flimsy (not saying that functionally its not a great phone).

whatever the next iteration, it'll be a best seller.

i'd like the release to be June, but feel it will be october (which, i guess, will be apple's new cycle)

Much prefer the feel of the 3GS as well. It doesn't feel as sturdy as the 4, but that feeling is incredibly misleading. Every single person I know IRL who owns an iPhone 4, has managed to crack it at some stage. It's a phenomenally fragile device. Conversely, the SGS2, which feels cheap and nasty is a far more robust phone.

I also liked the look of the 4, although I've always thought that there was far too much bezel on the front; and that view has only gotten stronger over time. I've used the analogy many times before but every time I look at the iPhone 4/4S I think of the older iMacs and their huge chins. They looked great in they're time, but they just look odd and dated now.
