Transmission Oil Blunder

    Hi all,

I bought the wife a 2004 hyundai Trajet last week. It's a 2.0L petrol one. The transmission was making a small bit of noise at low revs/high torque.

I went about adding some oil tonight...and made a bit of a mess of it. I opened a bolt (18mm) at the side of the gearbox, very near the top thinking it was the filler plug. There was no oil to be seen inside, so i added about 400ml of fluid. Thats when I noticed a small ball bearing on the top of the "filler plug" I had just removed. Inside the gearbox there was what looked like a gear, with a dent to take the ball bearing.

I decided that this probably wasn't the filler plug, and tightened it back up. I found another plug at the front of the gearbox, about midway up that looked like it was more likely to be the oil filer plug (17mm). I removed the plug, again there was no oil up to the level. I added about 100ml of oil before it started to come back out. I sucked out a small ammount to keep the oil below the filler level, and tightened the bolt.

Now, the burning qusetion....do the two plugs I removed share the same internal "space". Will the oil I added to the wrong plug have just drained down into the gearbox where it should be? Thinking about it..im not 100% sure that the plug at the front of the gearbox is actually the correct one....

On a better note, the noise is gone!!

If anyone can shed some light on the situation I would be very greatfull.

The would both likely have been into the same place, i.e the gearbox internals.

However, if you only had to add 100ml......then low oil wasn't the cause of the noise.

Think the OP added 500ml to bring it up to level, 400 through an opening that was probably not the filler plug.

    Hey,

Thanks for the replies! Pete67 is right, it took 500ml. It's good to know that the oil is all in the one place, and there isn't a pool of it sitting near the gearbox somewhere!

The noise has definatly gotten better since the oil was added...there is only a slight noise when the rpm is between 1300 and 1700 when going up the gears. Maybe that noise is normal for the car, it doesn't seem to affect the driveability at all.
