    hi all,

a workmate of my brothers is selling his 2003 saloon corolla 1.4vvti, its clean with low miles.

A quick question-when was the oil burning associated with the 00-01 vvti corollas sorted out.

It was sorted out with a piston mod was it IIRC changing the number of holes in the piston from 6 to 8, I know i downloaded the dealer paper on it however another man told me last week that it was a valve problem.

    thanks in advance

No they can still suffer right up until I think it is 2005. It's certainly not unheard of for Mk2 Avensis (with basically the same engine as the Corolla in question just in a larger size) right up until the facelifted models came out in 2006 to suffer from it.

How low is "low mileage"? It normally starts at around 60-80k miles.

Personally I'd rather something with high mileage, it wouldn't get that far if it was an oil burner! They're a very reliable engine as long as you avoid an oil burner.

I was thinking of getting a Corolla around 2003 / 2004. Is there really a very high incidence of oil burners or would it just be bad luck getting a bad one?

I would agree with all bar the starting at 60-80k miles bit. In my experience, it will start in 40's and by the time you hit 60, you will have a significant problem. Put it this way, you won't be wondering if it is or not!!
