Got the YLOD on my PS3 a few years ago (It's well out of warranty). I want to get it permanently repaired. I asked the Maynooth outlet of FixMyPc.ie and they offered a 90 quid repair with 3 month warranty. I think thats over priced and the warranty is too short. Has anyone tried any other good service? I'd want at least a years warranty and the confidence that it will last longer. Is that possible?

More importantly, can anyone tell me what I need to know about the methods used in repairing the systems and which one is the most effective?

Afaik, consolepro's offer a reball with a 6 month warranty. This is the repair type you want, assuming you have the regular cause of a ylod. Remember it can be a multitude of different problems, the ylod is a general indicator of a failure. A reball, with leaded solder, is the single best option for a permanent repair.

A reflow, uses heat to reflow broken solder joins. Because it's the same solder that broke in the first place, it's very unlikely this type of repair will be a permanent fix. It's cheaper, & the warranty is usually short - for a reason.

    Good luck :)

consolepros's reball warranty is one year and 6 months on a reflow if im not mistaken.

I was talking to him on here through pm when I started repairing,
    He definatly knows his stuff.

whoever fixes it for you make sure they use something called a bga rework station,
Most repair places don't use a BGA rework station and instead use half assed hillbilly repairs that they see on youtube causing much more damage than good,

And don't knock a reflow done properly ;)
Its a very long lasting fix once the technique is correct and the equipment is correct.
But yes a reball is the best

Oh I'm not knocking it at all, but most people seem to think wrapping a console up in a towel constitutes a reflow. Also, very few people don't do a reball correctly, so it tends to get a bad rap.

Imo a reball is the repair you want, & if consolepro's are offering a year warranty, you want beat that.

    Deffo agree with you,
especially if its a 60gig ps3 - reball that thing Its the only version of the console I actually class as a proper ps3
