Android Phone for 200-300 euro

It's my mothers birthday soon and I'm looking to pick her up a good phone for around 200-300 new. I don't want something too fancy, basically something that will be grand and speedy for the usual apps/internet browsing etc. I've been looking around and it seems that a HTC Wildfire could be a good option, or else a SonyEricsson Experia Ray. I also can get a phone from the UK if there is anything good on PAYG over there that could be unlocked.

    Any particular recommendations from people?

For your budget, a HTC ONE V, available from next Thu. (26th) from Amazon, will come in at about €290 on your credit card.

That looks perfect for what I need. It doesn't look like Vodafone have it coming in as a PAYG phone so it looks like ordering from Amazon will be the best option.

Thanks for that, my girlfriend has the Desire, so I can only assume the Desire S is lovely. I think I'd like to go for something that will have some OTA updates though, as I don't think my mother would appreciate me changing the roms every two months!

This might not quite be the right thread but I didn't want to open another recommendation thread just for me.

I'm similar to the OP that I'm not looking for a top of the range Android but a decent one.
Key things are for me external card slot so I can include all of my music (I have lot so 32GB minimum overall space)

Other than that I'm just looking for standard stuff. Solid camera, does the basics well: email, web browsing etc.

I don't want to pay through the nose so older models that are still good that I can pick up refurbished or 2nd hand is what I'm thinking. I really have no idea what to get though as the only ones marketed are the high end ones and for me they're just not worth the money. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Get a Galaxy S2, you should be able to get one for between 250 - 300€ 2nd hand. It will do everything you have mentioned very well indeed, and has 16gb of memory with scope for 64gb more with a microSD slot. You will also have Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest Android OS

If you really want a new phone, have a look at this. Only 1gb internal memory so would need a microsd card but get a 32gb one and you'd be fine. Still a very nice phone and very well priced now. Getting Ice Cream sandwich imminently too.

Yeah not much info out there but I'm delighted with it!

For the price, it's a good phone and the 4.3 inch screen is great. Nice and slim, looks good and people are always asking me about it. Very fast and runs any app I've come across. Camera is about average but overall, it's much better than other phones in that price range.

Only drawback is I’m still waiting for the ICS update but will be here soon enough hopefully.

Sorry bump but im debating which phone to go for the Sony Xperia U or the Alcatel One Touch 995

They're both around the same price, probably the One Touch being cheaper but not by much

    any advice?

I haven't experienced the Sony device but we have three Alcatel 995's in work and they are just dire devices!! Big blocky design, clunky, slow with an outdated UI style, would definitely not buy one myself.

Haven't used the Xperia myself but looks like a nice phone with good spec. I'd go for the 995 just for the bigger screen! :D

995 is thinner and lighter than a lot of phones with 4.3 inch screens. Even thinner than the Xperia U:

I've found it very fast and the UI is just a launcher. You can download a new one from the Play store for free.

Both 995 and U run Gingerbread but have planned upgrades to ICS. This means you can update them to ICS at any stage after the update is released. I don't have dates though :)

I use an iPod for music and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference between the two. Perhaps somebody with a finer sense of hearing could answer that one :p

Shop has one for 350 - seems a bit pricey to me

Yeah that sounds more like it. You can get a brand new galaxy nexus online for 385 so 350 for a second hand S2 would be mental.

Sigh. I don't know what to get really
