Planet X vs Orbea

I am going to buy new bike, hopefully carbon and have roughly €1800 to spend.

I was torn between an Orbea (I cycled one for a weekend in Spain and really liked it) and a planet X.

I had decided to go for the planet x RT-57 based on what poeple have said in this forum and it seems to be a better value option than Orbea.

However over the wend I was advised by two different people that planet X carbon is sub standard and I would be better off buying a bike like the Orbea as the frame would be better quality.

In fact one person told me that if I had less than 2k to spend I would be better going for an alluminium frame with good componenets and wheels.

    Any opinions?

    This one?

I'd go for a bike with drop bars. Miles better for road cycling.

If I told you to get the Planet X, would you be disappointed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17 bumbo

I do have a soft spot for the Orbea but I want to get the best value for money.

I had pretty much decided on the Planet X before talking to people over the wend who put me off saying the carbon they use is not as good a standard as in the likes of Orbea.

I know nothing about different standards of carbon but can see the compnents on the planet x are better.

This got me wondering are Plant X able to offer better components because the frames are not as good?

Bike purchases must always be emotional based. There is no place for "value" in a decision on which bike to buy. I know I'd go for the Orbea out of those two.

In 12 months time would you rather be :

Riding the 'better value ' bike, happy with the price but still lusting after the Orbea and thinking of trading in.

    ... or ...

Still catching yourself admiring the your Orbea thanking your stars you didn't make the 'sensible' choice.

Exact same reason why I bought a Storck over a Canyon and never once regretted it.

True Murph, but you do own a Canyon don't you?

My winter / bad weather bike is an Orbea. The chainstay snapped a few years back, but the entire frame was replaced as Orbea have a lifetime frame guarantee. That in itself is hard to beat.

How about something like this... http://www.dolan-bikes.com/road-bikes/Carbon/Shimano%20Op/Hercules%20SE%20Rd?product_id=411
I have this frame and I can't fault it. This has full Ultegra for €1780.

Oi !! Wash yer mouth out !!

My winter bike is a CAN ...nondale Caad 10 ;)

... and case in point, the poor old CAAD 10 gets treated like sh!te and the Storck is pampered and adored ... well was until the crash in Fermoy anyways

it's entirely possible that the people you spoke to may know nothing about carbon either :)

for what it's worth, the planet x bikes are make in the same factory as ribble's own brand bikes.

Are you buying the Orbea from a bike shop? The bike shop will be taking a few hundred margin, so that's one area where planet x can offer better value. Of course, you can then hassle your LBS if there are any problems with it.

Thanks Donie75, that looks great but I have limited the field to those two.
I need to just make a decision at this stage, have been thinking (and not cycling) for too long. :)

I'd go for the orbea! but at the same time i wouldnt let people talking about the quality of the carbon in px bikes put me off! i'd be very suprised to find out there was any major difference between the carbon diffrent brand use!

After all carbon frames are only made in a hand full of factorys so whats to say both bikes are not made in the same factory? i have never heard of even the cheapest ebay carbon frames just falling apart!

    Mmm. That Orbea is lovely.

    That's what I'd get.

i go with the Orbea, sweet looking ride.

Having had a planet x a few years back and currently on a Orbea SLT I must vote in favour of the Orbea. That said this inferior carbon thing should not even come into your thoughts when deciding. I found the planet x to be very comfortable and well made bike.I guess everyone will have their own opinions but I really couldn't fault them.

I rather the Orbea simply on its better styling IMO, slightly more comfortable riding position and its warranty !! Very hard to argue with anyone who will give you a lifetime warranty.

I'd go with the Orbea myself. Never ridden either of the bikes you've listed but visually the Orbea looks better to me.

I have a 2011 Orbea Onix 105 and I love it, I only use it for leisure riding and for sportives and I couldn't fault it and would highly recommend Orbea plus the lifetime frame warrenty is sweet.

Just one point I would make is that when I was shopping around I got caught up in the whole carbon frame thing and completely ruled out an alu frame as I thought this was the way to go.

Since then a pal of mine got a really nice Trek with an aluminium frame with full Ultegra and nice wheels which he picked up for under 1800 euros. My carbon frame bike is no lighter than his and there is no performance difference between the bikes.

My experience is limited but I think most carbon frames will be of similar quality unless you are spending big money as the market is so competitive.

As a previous poster said, go with your heart and ride the bike you will feel better on.

    Hope this helps.:)

I have 2 carbon framed planet x bikes , one of them for quite a few years with good mileage on it. Never had any frame or handling problems and the ride is smooth. Different world altogether to my previous aluminium bike
