Starting Coaching

I've had a knee problem that's stopped me being able to run for the last couple of years and even after physio and seeing specialists it doesn't look like it's going to get much better. I hope it will as I'd love to get back playing but it's not looking too good.

I was wondering though has anyone here moved from a player to coaching?

If so how did they start and how did they find it?

I've been filling in and doing a bit of player coaching owing to the absence of on of the coaches. I initially started doing the stretches with all the players, then I found myself doing the stretches and a cardio element, and then I found that I was doing the above and also taking the backs session. So it was a gradual process.

It's a bit like teaching really, you have to put a good bit of work in planning the session properly. I write down the activites beforehand in a small notebook and I bring with me to refer to. The activities I used were ones that I knew from doing in training sessions myself but I also got a heap of new ones from youtube! It's important to be absolutely clear in your instructions so all the players know exactly what their doing at all times.

On the negative side for me personally I found my own training dropping as I was spending time organising cones, explaining what to do, watching and encouraging etc.

    Good luck with it!
