Where was Smithfield Penitentiary based? Green Street?

It's part of my research on the deaf schools in Dublin.

    Many thanks,

    Shane

I was not aware of this. Using a quick google, I suspect it was actual at or on Smithfield. the prison at Green Street was Newgate Prison, but that is not to say there wasn't another prison.

There were a huge number of institutional uses west of Church Street, the quays and North Circular Road.

You might talk to the Prison Service - this has a minor reference to Smithfield: http://www.irishprisons.ie/about_us-history.htm

I wonder what the word is here: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,714701,734602,7,8 Have a look around that site on the various historic maps.

    Possibly Penitentiary; possibly something else.

At the other end of Smithfield was the Bridewell, centred here: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,714553,734376,7,9. That was the location of a prison. I don't know if it was ever known as anything other than the Bridewell.

No, the Bridewell, is quite separate. Various links from google list both and a bridewell and a penitentiary had different functions.

Hey are you sure the Smithfield Penitentiary is not up beside St Brendans Hospital in grangegorman? Its called the Richmond General Penitentiary and closed down years ago. Its located across the road from the entrance to St Brendans.
