I've a combo box for DTT (with a hdd recording facility), a 28" crt tv and stereo sound through my hi-fi. I'd like a bigger tv with hd, but it's only a like.
So if retailers were likely to sell off older tv's with no mp4 capability at some discount, i'd be interested.
This is exactly the segment of the market preying on ignorance, detested by many posters here for screwing unwitting customers. I'd like to think I'm witting and wondering about what people think.

Basically I just want a hd display, with hdmi in, with fair picture quality; sound and tuner, I don't care about.

You're not the only one. There are those who have no interest in Saorview & those who want a "bargain".

These tvs only have to be priced slightly cheaper than Saorview approved & they'll go, "witting" customers or not. I wouldn't expect any big discounts.

Wait until November. Then they will reduce in price.

Bargains will be had in a few months, pick up a decent tv for small money and if you're interested in, or need saorview get a receiver separately as no doubt they'll drop in price too.
Anyone who's planning to stick with Sky or UPC won't really care about saorview and will get some cheap tv's as stores look to offload stock.Argos for example are giving half price saorview boxes with some non-saorview compatible tv's.

I dunno. I think it's a mugs game. Often if you shop around you can find a decent Tv at similar price. Some countries ban this sort of product dumping of obsolete kit in Retail channel.

If they are genuinely sold at 1/3rd to 1/2th price and a big sticker saying needs set-box for TV then I'd agree. But my survey suggests these Obsolete sets are overpriced and poorly labelled. I'd complain to retailer and NCA about sharp marketing rather than recommend these.

    There is very little discount.

I agree, recently I was at the XtraVision sale, many customers were driven by the size of the screen alone, there is enough scope to shift units on this parameter alone. I bought a new TV before Christmas and I went to most of the Irish usual suspects, I was shocked by the sales guys to be honest, their lack of knowledge of the basic features of the different generations of TVs was shocking. In all the shops I went to nobody knew what DNLA was (bar one guy). I had to change how I was asking the questions as I was getting nowhere with technical ones, e.g.
Q: why is this TV more expensive than this one?
A1: It has a better picture
    A2: Its a newer generation
    A3: Its slimmer

I just researched it on line and informed myself about them. I don't understand it to be honest if I was in charge of selling 25 models of TV I'd know the differences between them. There was a foreign Asian guy in PC world/curry's in blanchardstown he knew his stuff.
It seems that most of us don't know the difference between TVs and so there will still be a market and people willing to pay too much for older technology preventing someone who knows why something is limited from capitalising on it

That's the problem with sales people in electrical stores. They expect you to do your own research , come into the shop, say which one you want, pay and leave.

I had looked at UK retailer websites to see if their old (not freeview HD approved) TVs were going cheap but they aren't. There isn't really any value in buying old obsolete TVs when you take into account having to buy another set top box.
