    Greetings.
I want to spend up to 5k cash to buy a family saloon car, preferably 5 door for extra boot space. The newer the better.
I don't do much mileage (<15k miles per year).
Looking for suggestions on a best buy in peoples experiences?
Reliability and economical are the priorities.

You'll get the likes of a 5 or 6 year old Astra, Focus, Mondeo, Vectra, or Avensis for 5 to 6k.

Nope, the smart money is in petrol cars at the moment as the current trend is for everyone to buy diesels, even those who actually have no use for them. So less wanted petrol cars are going cheap.

OP, great value out there is these cars:

And to add to that, the bigger the better (value)

Those '07 large family saloons in your post for €4.5k are bargains!

Just read the Mondeo ad properly

72k km (just over 40k miles )
    good tyres, new pads
over a year NCT (and only tested 2 months ago)
    tax till end of June
    asking €4,650 "Reasonable offers considered!"

Surely then it would be yours for a bit over €4k cash

No mention of SH, and basic enough spec, but a lot of (newish) car for very little money

I agree that there is good value in petrol cars at the moment. with the increase of fuel costs and its not going to stop for a while higher mpg figures are becoming more important as are repair and servicing costs and. and with these in mind the skoda does score well.

And there is the whole uncertainty of where we are going to end up with the issue of nox that europe seem to be looking into

either way petrol or diesel there is good value to be had at the moment. aloof 07 cars are becoming hard to sell due to the fact that in some cases 08 models of the same car can have much cheaper road tax

07 or older cars cost alot less to buy than a 08 or newer, cheap motor tax is a false economy in this regard which the Irish public seem to embrace. Spending thousands more to save a few hundred is a daft practice. All that is about to change in this years coming budget though. The gap will not be so big come next January.
