    Hi all,
I will have to tutor basic geometry and remember seeing some oversized protractors and set squares long time ago somewhere. Anybody know where you get these in this day and age ?

    Any advice appreciated :-)

Wissner ones are best, magnetic and bigger than helix ones.

Thanks for the links! I'm in Dublin, any place near that I could call to?
It would be great if I could get a kit by mid week.
A big thanks for the help so far :-)

Thanks everybody for the help. I rang Evans and they have a kit for €35 inc postage. May not be the best quality in the world but will do the job for me!!

    Thanks again :-)

I generally don't bother using the board protractor, compass etc anymore especially when it comes to teaching constructions. I find the site mathsisfun.com provides a brilliant resource for teaching this:

    mathsisfun.com/geometry/constructions.html

Hopefully this is of some help to you.

The only problem with websites and powerpoint for a topic like geometry is that they dont show students how to used their equipment correctly.

personally I think the teacher has to for this in class as to assume thst kids know how to used a protractor is optomistic at best and ate the other end of the scale bordering on madness.......

Sorry for digging up an old thread but as I was on the search for some gear again I thought I'd post a link to a handy site. (Of course I'd always prefer to show students on the board myself but our protractors are all broken!!). I tried it out a few times and they were all able to use protractors no probs after doing it online... here's the link ...WHAT"S MY ANGLE .... if you know anyone handy with computers you can get the flash file from the site so you can drag it onto any browser even when offline !!

Anyone recommend any good student geometry sets .... that don;t break!!! There's lots of sets knocking about for one or two euro but the compasses are a joke to say the least!!

Get a good tg compass. Buy from someone like sligograph, 4€ will get you a decent one and since they do geometry for the whole course its a good investment.

Like this one ??. I think the ones where you put the full pencil in are doomed to failure.

yeah they're very good. Good stiffness too in the arms and can do a large radius. You can buy replacement leads too. I usually buy them and sell them as needed for a few pence each. If one kid buys a pack the others try to scab them off them.
