Old Trafford - The theatre of dreams

Just saw this on the logo in the Everton matchthread and realised that I'd never questioned it.

Do any other teams have similar labels for their stadia?

I guess it doesn't really bother me too much but it does seem pretty self-serving. How long has it been used for? Was it in common use in the 70's and 80's.

I am sure it has been used before then but the first time I can recall hearing it was around the season United had the jersey with the stadium on it (94-95?).

wiki says Bobby Charlton nicknamed it, no idea when.

I only heard of this for the first time in the 90's.

Only as black humour back then! Bobby Charlton coined the term in an interview and the marketing dept were on it like a shot.

Liverpool were the first visiting team to Old Trafford and won the game 4-3.

Celtic Park also known as 'Paradise' - nickname stems from 1892!

Because the thread is indicative of the **** that clogs up the forum and I wanted to say so.

I assume every time you see something you disagree with you say nothing?

Because they feel the topic isn't worth commenting on but in an awesome boards.ie display of petty one-upmanship, they do actually think that the fact the topic isn't worth commenting on is, in fact, worth commenting on.

If I have nothing more to contribute to the forum/thread then, yes, I say nothing.
If I actually disagree with something then I make an attempt to constructively disagree with it.
I certainly don't go into threads with crap contributions like yours above. Saying "Who cares" isn't even a disagreement or a debate. It's as useless as the thread that was started.

"Who cares" is a valid contribution. It indicates that A) this is not a topic worthy of discussion because B) Old Trafford is rarely, if ever, referred to by that name in the hustle and bustle of the real world

It was given the amount of
    consideration that it warranted.

Premiership club in self aggrandizing promotional name shocker.

The OP wanted to know something, he asked, he got an answer and hopefully (when I stop biting) we all move on.

The thread contributed something to someone and that's what the forum is for.

The little who cares is a relatively harmless protest that don't really pull the thread off-topic. It's the arguments that do that.

Mars, its best ignored or there will be a few unnecessary posts out of this. I've failed a few times to ignore it in the past. Not sure why we need a thread on this but it doesn't bother me or matter that much.

IMO, the "who cares" initiates the off topic arguments and the forum as a whole would be better off without those two words strung together. I just feel it's disrespectful to the OP and the people who were polite enough to answer the question.

Finished with this now as I feel I have made my opinion clear enough and it'll just go around in circles!

Hope you got the answer you were looking for OP.

I think you will find that "The Theatre of Dreams" is used more often than Old Trafford on RTE2.

Not quite the same but I only learned recently that West Ham have played at 'The Boleyn Ground' since 1904.

I always thought Upton Park was the name of the stadium.

Same with Arsenal. For 90+ years they as far as everyone was concerned they played at Highbury, but the official name of the ground was actually 'Arsenal Stadium'.

Terms like 'The Theatre of Dreams' are favourites of media editors who try to make football related stories interesting to an audience that does not necessarily follow football.

The one I hate most is ' the beautiful game', it's the most over used term in all of sports.

Another pet hate of mine is when media this side of the world refer to American Football as 'gridiron'. No one in America refers to (American) football as 'gridiron'.

    Right on the money here.

I've never heard American football called gridiron :confused:

There was a film called the Arsenal Stadium Mystery made in 1939.

I had a mate who named his shed "Theatre of Dreams" and even put up a little sign, I think he bought it from the gift shop.

He actually is a Utd fan as well, says it all TBH :D
