Slipping out of gear

    Hi.

Looking for a bit of advise.
Twice today my car has slipped out of 5th gear and was a bit concerting as I was on the motorway.

The car was recently been serviced and the garage said they also carried out a full car check and said the car was in great working order. Car is serviced every 8k.

Actually the car has never caused me a problem in the 129k miles I have put on the clock.

As I know little about cars, would anyone be able to advise what would be causing this. I have the car booked in for timing belt change next week and was wondering if that could be the problem. I really can't afford it to be a big issue.

    Thanks for any advise.

Depends on what type of car, make, model, Petrol, diesel, gearbox speed 5 or 6 speed?

It can be anything from a mount to a linkage or gearbox internals. The timing belt will have no effect on a gearbox nor will a service history unless they done something to the gearbox..

Similar thing happened to my car, and it was the fifth gear in the gearbox was worn. Before we got the the stage of replacing the gearbox, we tried adjusting, then replacing the gear linkage cables. By we I mean mechanics of course!

    Good luck.

Are the gears hard to change? A stiff or worn linkage might be fixed with cheapish parts or just some good grease. If the gearbox is worn cheapest solution is a decent box from a breaker. Gearbox I mean.

Gear changes are no different. The car is running fine, even when in 5th gear. The gear stick just slowly moves back out of the 5th gear position into neutral.
I have a mechanic looking at it in the morning.
