Thinking of a diesel Golf..

I'm hoping someone could give me some tips - I'm considernig a next car and want something nice to drive and comfy, decent power without drinking juice - and I was considering a turbo diesel Golf. I've never been much of a Golf fan so I do not really know to mich about the differences of the models and engines etc. I think I want the new(er) shape - as in 2003 onwards. I'm wondering what is the best engine to go for, is it a 1.9 or 2 litre? I believe there is one with mid range bhp but huge torque - I'm also told you can chip these for a few hundred quid and geta fairly impressive boost in power too. Is there a particular model I should be aiming towards?

I'm looking for a 3 door, and I almost defintiely want leather seats, the can look pretty tatty without it. Thing is i'm looking around and can find very very few of them. Not sure about budget yet I'll have to see what my options are. I'm sick of buying cars that depreciate like a stone and I'm guessing something like this would hold its value as well as anything due to being diesel, practical, comfy yet a decent drive too.

Any thought or comments would be great.
    Thanks

You'll pay a fair premium for a leather clad (or even recaro GTi), 2003, diesel, 3 door Golf if you can find one.

I can't see you finding too many of those in Ireland at the moment as RJ says. If you want to fulfill that criteria you're probably gonna need to look at the UK.

Also if you want something that's comfy and not too bad on juice how about a big Peugeot 406 HDi?

People looking or 3 door golfs don't usually consider 406s

Well the OP did state they wanted something nice and comfy to drive so that rules a Golf out straight away for me anyway unless it was a GTI...

There's a few of them about, fine bus to be fair. When I was a rep one of Dublin based lads had a petrol one as he wasn't doing much miles to warrant a diesel. Well specced ones with leather are very nice places to be.

Hmm, i might have to reconsider then. For me a golf would be the most boring car I've ever owned, but i cannot deny the practicality of it. 406? No thanks lol :) when I say comforable, I mean more comfortable than an normal sprotscar with rock hard suspension.

Do you mind me/us asking what were the last 2 cars you owned?

Secondly do you need a diesel. Diesel cars and golfs especially add a huge premium to the price. Also the older ones will have seen alot of abuse/mileage by now. What will your annual mileage be?

Thirdly there are a few MKV Gti 3 doors out there with leather and DSG and will not be boring. For me the MKV Gti is the best car of the last 10 years and they have taken most of their depreciation by now.

Why? Is the 06 one better than the 05 one?

Because im keeping it 3-4 years and that one you linked is actually owned by a mod on vagdrivers.net i think so it is mint.

Year wouldn't bother me if the car was for fun but it's gonna be my everyday car so, been drooling over this one recently(omg the SEATS <3)

I still can't fathom why the year would make a difference then?

Surely if you plan on keeping it, then condition is priority?

You're not seriously suggesting that depreciation on a 5 year old car is the reason you are not going to buy it?

I suggested 7 year old and u thought it was to old...I'm confused.

Also I don't think cream leather is any harder to throw a wipe across every now and then.

Everyone has different opinions, i have had an old underpowered fat car for 5 years, i finally managed to get some money together so i want as clean unique and new a car as i can afford, have no interest in a car somebody has already modified/tweaked so as new and stock a golf gti or ED30 as 11 grand will get me is what im hoping for with low milage.

I'm hugely confused ted. You said you have been drooling over a modified gti yet then you say you want a stock one. You don't want a 07 one mainly because you fear depreciation but you say you want the newest one €11k will get you....

    Best of luck mate!

It's a nice ED30 Replica and the Milage is low, what's not to like

It kinda can be...slightly anyway. The late 06 on have the BWA engine that supersedes the AXX. It's said to have a few more bhp and has updated diverter valve and PCV.
