only five months of cycling insurance?

    hey all,

I only need cycling insurance for May thru the beginning of September, when I will return to the States and be eligible for renters insurance through my bank there that should cover my bike (which I will be shipping home).

but I'm buying a new bicycle today which is 1200 quid plus say an extra hundred or so for accessories. I want to be insured for theft and accidental damage. I will not be racing but I will be doing some cross-country touring.

I only see what I think are year-long premiums--is there anywhere you can only pay a month at a time?

I have travel insurance which covers lost and stolen items, but I've already made a claim in December for a stolen purse which included my US passport, wallet, etc. and they've been absolutely terrible about processing the claim. I was supposed to recieve the payment in mid-March but have seen nothing yet. I'd hate to try making another claim through them unless it was something directly related to travel such as lost airline baggage.

Basically their customer service is piss-poor. I can ask them if they'd cover my bicycle, but you know how insurance companies are after you've made a claim already (although the claim I made was less than the cost of the premium I paid so it's not like I'm a high risk customer)

Anyway, just wondering. I'd never do something stupid like leave the bike overnight in a public place or unlocked with my back turned but I do nip into shops from time to time and you never know when you might get hit by a crazed taximan and end up with a ruined bike.

    thanks for your advice.

Can you not cancel cover part way through the year and get a refund (possibly less admin fee)?

that's too much red tape for me--

I actually work for an insurance company (mobile technology) and the number of people writing in saying, my policy wasn't cancelled when I asked for it to be, or asking, where is my refund?? ... well, it makes me nervous.

Can you not pay the annual premium by monthly direct debit and then just cancel when leaving??
