    Get the pedals.

I got mine for like 25 quid. They have clip in on one side and flat on the other, so if you decide you don't like to clip in after all or if you're just gonna nip to the shops real quick in yer trainers, you can do it like that.

If you have flat pedals then make sure you get flat shoes so that they'll be compatible.

The shoes are the dear bit. If you are going to the trouble of getting 'cycling shoes' you should get pedals.

The whole point of cycling shoes is that they let you use clipless pedals. There are bmx shoes and the like which are similar to skate shoes and have normal soles and thus could be used with flat pedals but most proper cycling shoes would be much worse than normal shoes on flat pedals.

So buy some clipless pedals, they're class.

Ok thanks for the replies I'm convinced on the clip less, but like I said I'm new at this.i have a chris boardman bike with normal pedals.so which clipless pedals am I looking for ? I've looked on chain reaction and theres millions of them.

These would do you well, you have the flat side for getting used to clipless pedals.

If you want to go straight to clipless and don't want to spend too much money then these are all you need

I bought these recently and find them very good. They are flat on one side with clips on the other. I got them for €42.

Has anyone used these Chrome SPD shoes.

I want something that I can wear to college and to work. I already carry a laptop and some books so carrying another pair of shoes is not an option.

Cycle shoes give more support. I would recommend anyone who bikes a bit to wear cycling shoes because it takes the pressure off the bow of your foot. Also running shoes often are very open in the front, which means that the wind and water from the road will get through very easily.

I biked with shimano spd shoes (the ones that look like normal shoes) on normal pedals for months before I got clipless.

You should get clipless though, it's really much better and safer.
