If a TV has a built in digital TV tuner/reciever,then can it be simply hooked up to an external satalite dish without the need for a set top box??

Or is a set top box also needed??

Im looking to pick up the various FTA channels and have a satalite dish,so Im wondeing if the TV will pick them up with just the dish??

    Thanks.:)

You need a tv with a built in FTA tuner (satellite).
That one has a Freeview tuner which is the UK digital terrestrial service.
Unless it's mpg4 compatable (should say somewhere on the box, manual) then it's unlikely to be even SaorView compatable.

It is MPG4 and works with Saorview.:)

So will it pick up all the FTA channels with just a dish then and no set top box??

    Thanks.:)

No, I'm afraid you will need a Set Top Box to pick up the UK FTA stations, but they are cheap as chips these days . . .

So if I wanted to get FTA to 4 different TVs in 4 different locations then I willl need 4 set top boxes then, yes??

And I will also need a quad LNB and 4 cables from the dish into the attic??

The dish is new and is 80cm in diamater,is that big enough??

    Thanks.:)

If you want four totally independent signals then yes you will need four FTA boxes. I have four in my house, one of which is 'the good one' and the other three, which are not so good, one of the cheap boxes lives in the kitchen and is exclusively used as a FTA radio (plugged into the aux socket of my Mini HiFi).

You can now get a quad LNB with a fifth socket http://www.dipol.com.pl/pict/a98262+.jpg this 5th socket is an input for your roof aerial, (so you actually plug your aerial into the quad LNB) and the four outputs from the LNB then carry a mixed signal, combining the Irish stations from your aerial + the UK dish stations in each coax cable, to each TV/Radio. In essence the LNB then acts as a splitter for the Saorview signal. You will then need four little boxes called 'combiners' http://www.electrosmart.co.uk/images/FC-COMB-SAT-KN.jpg which seperate the Irish/UK signals before entering your four STBs. and yes, the 80cm dish is more than big enough.

Phew, its all so complicated these days :)

Right,my TV is picking up Saorview,TV3 and 3E and a heap of radio stations just from an indoor areal.

Would it also pick up the likes of the BBC and ITV channels,if I just use a dish and no set-top box??

You cant use a dish without a set top box, unless the TV has a built in Sat reciever.

Unless your VERY VERY close to the boarder with the UK or the north, your not going to get any ITV or BBC or freeview channels

If you have a dish already, and its pointed in the right direction, You need something like this

    (very basic cheap model)

So with that LNB and those little junction boxes.....I can have my Saorview and my FTA channels via 1 co ax cable and set top box per TV and dont need heaps of other gadgets and boxes at each TV then?

All those connectores can stay up in the attic, where the electrical ran all the co-ax cables to then??

    Happy days so.:D

No, you really do need a FTA 'Set Top Box' to pick up the UK stations.

Suggest you try: Argos, Curry's, Power City, DID Electrical, Harvey Norman, etc . . .

For The Free to Air, that would be perfect. 80cm is perfect for recieving Standard UK Free tv.

if your looking for channels more further a field, (eastern europe, etc) you'd need a bigger dish

I got mine in Peats of Parnell St Dublin, but sadly I gather they haceased trading in recent weeks, so I guess you could try 'Maplin', also in Dublin. The staff are also very helpfull there, so they should talk you through your Satellite equip needs.

The lnbs are available here, also at a well known (northern) Irish trade outlet. Google "lnb with terrestrial input" or similar.

The diplexers for splitting out the signals at the tv can also be bought integrated into a wallplate & are widely available.

Almost €50 for the inverto quad with the terrestrial port. Rip off.

It's a lot cheaper at the other (trade only supposedly) place I mentioned.

Doesn't seem to be much retailing of them online, maybe if the OP asked some of the other well known sellers, they might decide it would be a good idea to stock them. Worked for me in the past, they were only too glad to get pointers as to what would sell.
