    Hi Folks,

I'm hoping a few here can shed some light on getting into farming.
So long story short, I was in the construction industry and it appears Ireland may be built for the next 10years so a change in career is the aim.

My experience in farming- I've really just done a bit of gardening... I've grown spuds and tomatoes out the back garden!

To get me started I have my eye on 10acres of land for sale, I've no experience in livestock but would be open to start small.

So, my questions, what should I be looking out for when buying the land & is there any particular area of farming is easier/more suitable than others to start with land of that size?

    Thanks
    Low Energy Eng

Well first off, do you want to make a living from farming or will this be a hobby?

You won't make any money from 10 acres in cattle or sheep, any substantial anyway.

The other thing is, what type of land is the 10 acres.?

Theres a big difference between marginal land and tillage type land.

Maybe if you go down the horticulture route and grow organic veg etc you might make some money.

For cattle, cows or sheep 10 acres would be too small to make it worthwhile IMO.

    Best of luck.

If your sitting on enough cash to buy 10 acres and start livestock farming on it maybe you should consider other options as an investment... You could probably make more from a decent deposit account... If you're just buying it for a hobby then you will really enjoy it... go for it!

If your considering borrowing the money... don't! You won't even make the repayments on the loan !
