    Hi,

I was wondering would anyone know the legal definition of "inherit". The reason I am trying to find out is I am trying to discover can someone "inherit" a plot of land from one of their parents without that parent passing away.

I know about gifting etc, but my real focus is on the word "inherit".

    Thanks

The answer is no. The definition can be taken from a legal or indeed normal English dictionary for your purposes.

Thanks for that. I had it from the dictionary which mentioned passing onto an heir. I was hoping this might sqeeze me in.

This is in relation to planning permission so I'm trying everything I can, thanks.

It depends. If for example one child received a house or a substantial college fund while the parents were alive, but the other children received nothing, that could be treated as an inheritance in calculating the distribution of assets upon the parents' deaths.

The Succession Act and the Revenue may treat things slightly differently.
