Lexus IS220D

Was thinking of changing my 06 Accord Cdti to an 08 Lexus IS220 diesel. Took the Lexus home for the night.

Very, very disappointed in it. Way less roomy in the cabin than the Accord, crap power delivery, gearing just feels wrong. I dont know what the 6th gear is for because the car just hadn't got the power to be able to use it.

Why are they so expensive? The Accord seems much much better engineered. I can't wait to give the Lexus back!

I knew there was a bit of a premium because it's a Lexus as opposed to a Honda but I just expected more.

    Definitely don't change.

Yeah, definitely wont go for the Lexus. Very disappointed because I like the look of them. Not all out to change anyway so I'll probably stay with what I have. Tax up soon and it breaks my heart handing over ca. 1000 euro so that's why I was having a look.

Alfa 159 JTDm? Great car if you were looking to change?

The Sport model IS220d has different gear ratios. If the rest of the car is to your liking otherwise it may be worth sourcing one. A neighbour has one and it's a nice looking car.

    I'd be keeping the accord

Ah, I'm not really that bothered about changing really. I had an 09 Accord DTEC out for a couple of days as well but that didn't really light my fire either. It was a fine car alright but didn't 'feel' as torquey as my own car believe it or not.

I was just so disappointed in the Lexus though that I just had to tell someone!!

That's the thing. I think they look lovely on the outside but the interior was disappointing too. Seemed smaller than the Accord. The ride quality was better than the Accord though I think.

I had a 07 one of them for a few years. Very comfortable, but small boot and rear seating area. Not great on mpg and high road tax. Have a 10 Superb now, not as comfortable but better in other ways.

If you like the Accord why not change it for a 08 new shape one, it is everything the previous Accord was but also better. The IS220d is well known for head gasket problems also along with the wrong gearing though the gearing was addressed with the Sport model. Over all though it is not at the races.

A new shape Accord i-DTEC or a BMW 320d are light years ahead of the IS220d.

Yeah, might look at an 08 Accord DTEC alright. Had a loan of one for a few days prior to trying out the Lexus. Nice car and it was light years ahead of the Lexus but it didn't really blow me away compared to my own though. It was more comfortable but not immensely more. Body roll is definitely improved over my own but heavier on fuel (47mpg vs 51 mpg over a week on a 80 mile per day round trip). Bit bigger than my own inside but not as big as I expected from the exterior but plenty big for me anyway.

Kinda like you said, little bit better in most ways without being an awful lot better. Looks much better though!

Maybe the time will come when looks won't matter as much as the practicalities ? I thought like you when I bought the Lexus. I'm happier now though.

My mate has one. I couldn't believe how useless 6th gear was

My old Golf would pull away in 6th from about 45mph, the Lexus can hardly cruise at 60 in 6th

Keep the Honda op. The Lexus suffers from HG issues along with EGR valve trouble too..
