Just wondering whats the 'platinum' mean, like is extra on this model as opposed to a zetec or ghia for example?
Anything to look out for in particular buying one of these? Cheers

It's a run out special edition.

Platinum and Steel were run out versions of the old model Mondeo, and it seems to be fairly random as to what those badges were stuck on.

We used to have a Mondeo LX Steel as a runabout car. Pretty sure it was a standard LX with Alloys and Fogs.

    Normal line up was
    LX
    Zetec
    Ghia
    Titanium & Titanium X (apparently!)

Steel was €350 over the LX model, so that fits with adding Alloys and Fogs.

I think Platinum was in addition to Zetec and possibly gave a Sunroof.

Zetec over LX was Leather steering wheel and Gearknob, Alloys (also part of Steel pack), lowered sports suspension, body coloured wing mirrors and door handles and rear electric windows. Possibly Cruise and Climate on later models.

Think Ghia gave full leather - it was full leather when they were known as Executive models and the Ghia replaced the Executive.

I'd be surprised if there were many (if any) Titanium or Titanium X models sold in Ireland around that time. Haven't a clue what extra that gave over the Ghia.

Platinum is basically a Zetec. Almost bought an ex demo TDCi back in 06, it had lots of toys!

I got a zetec platinum too, but it didn't have the platinum badge on the back, so cos it sounded flashier I wanted one so true to source one, couldn't find em on eBay etc so ended up ringing a ford parts company in the uk who didn't know what it was... Was an Irish only tweak to the Zetec apparently

Great great car. Some of them can be underpowered, but road holding for a medium saloon is second to none

oh she seems fantastic:Di was always a person who never went above 1.6 but seeing as they only start in a 1.8 range I took a chance, are they a timing chain or belt though???its the 1.8 duratec HE engine,it seems nippy enough whilst not as heavy on petrol as I would have assumed,i traded in my old Nissan primera as I noticed it was getting quite difficult to shift it and went for a lovely Ford:)

Did you get an LX (Steel) or Zetec (Platinum)?
The LX was detuned to 108bhp from 125bhp for fleet puposes apparently. I had one and it was fairly slow. Great handling though

The exterior door mirrors electrically fold open and close with the touch of a button. Usually reserved for higher spec models.

Is the zetec not worthy of those??!

    :pac:

Apparently not. They came on the Ghias and STs.

Pre 05 you would need to install a wiring loom but most post 05 came with the loom installed. All you need is the mirrors, relay n switch. (have them all)

Also does your Zetec have interior footwell lighting? If not the bulb holder should already be in place and all you have to do is put in the bulbs and voila. Your footwells are lit up

Zetec/Platinum are the middle of the range model so they would not be standard on those. They are normally standard on the Ghia, Executive, Titanium or ST models.

can somebody advise me on the clutch/flywheel on these mondeo's???are they affected by the same issues with the flywheel as the earlier models???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Dual mass flywheels generally only give trouble on diesel cars and are classed as a consumable.

Don't some of these have a swirl flap issue?

I would've known this years ago, haven't even thought about a 1.8 mondeo in ages

Maybe this was only on the higher bhp 1.8?

    Yep.
I think they may have fixed the issue by 06 though

That affected the petrol pre facelifts 2001 to late 2003 but not completely unheard of on later models.

yeah,as flyingsnail says it affected some others but was generally sorted by then, the one I got has a full service history and I absolutely love it,i traded in a primera for it and glad I did so,never ever again will I buy a Nissan unless its a 350Z :D

NOTE:NISSAN PRIMERA'S ARE BAD FOR YOUR WALLET

They should as it was just a rebadged Zetec which came with a sunroof back then.

Mine is a 2006 platinum diesel but has not got a sunroof. What it does have though is a dmf that's shagged! Replacing it with a solid this week do hopefully the conversion will be a success.

OP - the petrol also has a dmf but as it's petrol they are unlikely to cause trouble. Had a 2001 petrol mondeo for 7 years. Best car I ever had

1.8 petrol model's have a dmf???didn't think they did, whats the average mileage to change a clutch???mine is the original factory clutch,180km's on the clock now

All mk3 engines have a DMF AFAIK

Mine was a 2001 and when I got rid of it it had over 160k miles on it. I never had to touch the clutch or flywheel at all. I knocked up over 110k miles on it so pretty certain the clutch was the original.

Swirl flaps can be an issue on models up to 2003 I believe but I never bothered changing them. If they rattle change them though as they'll ruin the engine if they break off

DMF and clutch replaced in my old 05 1.8lx at approx 160,000km
Car was ex-taxi though so was used more than a daily driver

Ask them what parts they intend to use. AFAIK they are LUCS or Sachs parts. The guy i used put in a dmf from a company called GAL ( anyone i've spoken to has never heard of them)
Any way it didnt fix the issue. DMF was still vibrating. Mechanic said nothing wrong with it and he couldnt feel any vibration.

Got a reputable indy to send the dmf for testing and it was found to be barely within tolerance levels. So dont make an expensive mistake like me and make sure your mechanic uses decent parts

Sorry for the bump, asking for a friend, he has a chance to upgrade to a 2006 Mondeo LX Steel 2.0 diesel for cheap today from his current 01 Mondeo. Does anyone know of any dealbreakers for that model? He always buys Mondeos for pulling trailers etc so not interested in alternatives just wants to know if its a decent Mondeo or did it have issues? Thanks...
