Despite the misleading headlines in the Independent, it's not just aimed at pedestrians but
It will also target cyclists not using lights at night, breaking traffic signals or cycling in the wrong direction on one-way streets.

and this is a good idea
Today on the central reservation of O'Connell Street between 4pm and 6pm, pedestrians and cyclists will get a chance to be in the position of a truck driver. They will be able to get a view from the truck cab and see danger zones where a driver sight line is blocked.

I got flagged down and was asked to hop in and have a look from the truck driver's perspective this afternoon. Initially I thought the truck surrounded by Gardai was some kind of Joe The Builder Guy from Achill style protest that got lost on the way to Kildare St.. Then when the Gard asked "Are you in a rush?" my mind started racing to remember if I had done anything dodgy in the last hundred metres. The Gard's big grin broke this spell however.

As you'd expect it's not easy to see anything directly in front of the truck. The one they are using has double wing mirrors, plus one that pokes out the front and points at the area in front of the truck. There is decent coverage, but as the drivers says, they can't look in all the mirrors at once. They do emphasise that drivers are looking out for cyclists and that you should do what you can to help.

I thought it was pretty well run to be honest. They were so friendly I didn't even decline the hi-vis vest they produced (inevitably).
