    Hi All,

This might seem a bit of a wierd question but can UPC disconnect my analogue feed into my house but continue to supply the digital feed ?

The reason I ask is I have both at present supplying two TV's but I have and only want one STB. Needless to say the second tv point is one I installed my self ?

Any advise would be much appreciated:)

I wouldn't quite put it like that. More accurate to say that UPC can't supply you with any service via cable without supplying you with the analogue TV service, because its unencrypted. That's why broadband-only customers pay a supplement, because UPC **has** to supply them with the analogue TV service. There's no encryption, and no way for UPC to shut it off without going out and cutting the cable.

Digital on the other hand, can be switched off remotely by UPC deauthorising the viewing card.

    Thanks for the replys

So to break it down. If UPC cut the cable outside then I get no service ?? analogue or digital ? Is this correct

If you only wanted the basic analogue stations (18 stations in Dublin) do you have to pay UPC for those 18 stations,or are they free??

    Its all very confusing nowadays.

Technically you would have to pay but if they are already connected you will recieve them for " free " I say free but what I mean is UPC do not know you are connected to the cable and as long as they do not disconect the cable you will continue on to recieve the channels.
But if they did know you were connected you would be eitheir disconnected or billed

There's nothing 'technical' about it. If you're receiving their service without paying it's theft.

Im only on Saorview at the moment.

How much is it for the basic 18 channels then?

    Thanks.

PS-Also (out of curiosity) how could they tell if someone was recieving the basic 18 channels then?

Do they have some sort of meter signal tester machine or do they send some lad out around the areas in a upc van to visually inspect the connection boxes on the house walls??

Depending on the deal at the time, I think it is approx 26 per month. However If you go for the "digital value" package (not avilalable on their site) you get one grey non recording non HD box, which gives the 18 channels plus a few more from the basic digital package. It's actually less around 23 per month

Min 1 year contract and you may have to pay install charge. You also need to be in a cabled area. As you can't order it on their site you can ask on the phone for free connection etc.

They send a guy in a van with eyes. High tech. Sometimes properties are missed for years. They don't like disconnecting people as it costs them money to visit the property and half the country is behind in payments.

They can cancel the card in the digital box remotely, and then eventually disconnect the cable when they are passing next.

If you have Saorview consider getting FreeSat HD+ for UK channels using a dish. You don't get discovery channel, MTV etc but no monthly charge

    €24.50 p.m last time I checked.

If you're receiving UPC analogue without paying, you have absolutely no complaint if UPC disconnect you.

Am I correct in saying that you can no longer subscribe to the analogue service? Any new subs have to be digital?

I am not sure. The "digital Value" is not available on their site, yet I had it in the past. Whether you can ring them up and ask for digital value or not, I suspect you can.

I would not ring them up and ask for analogue only, as digital value is ACTUALLY cheaper, and you get analogue channels and one non recording box.

If you get any broadband package, you also get the analogue channels by default (if you don't get TV with broadband they charge you 7 extra per month)

Some people are still on the analogue only service. I suggest they should upgrade to digital value to save money.

Is the analogue signal available in every area? When I search for channels on my TV, I get all 108 digital channels to come up but blanked out because I'm not a digital subscriber, I do get RTE one though oddly enough, but that's it. Then I get 38 cable radio channels, but nothing after searching the analogue signal.

From what I read on here, both signals come down the same cable, why would i be getting the (encrypted) digital signal and not the analogue? Does it depend on the area you're in or the way you have it connected to the TV? If I get one signal I should get both.

The analogue channels are not available in Cork, nor areas with MMDS.

Some people with MMDS do not realise, as it's apartment wide MMDS or even ran to an entire estate. If they never ran a cable to that part of the town/city then they may have put up an MMDS dish somewhere nearby and then cabled that signal to every house. It's a lot more common than you think, for Example parts of Dun Laoghaire.

You can ring UPC on 1908 and they can tell you.

In particular if your can get Digital, but not digital plus it generally indicates you are in a Chorus old MMDS area.

This is thread is pretty similar to what I have been asking here

I can only receive stations in my 2 tv points in my house using the UPC digital box. I rang them today and they wanted to charge me 3.50 per month to receive the analogue signal which means I could plug my tv directly into the outlet. They said I only pay for a "digital signal". crazy altogether
