Hi ,was wondering how old you have to be to avail of the free dental treatment with the medical card,
regarding school goers.Do you have to be in secondary school or over 16?
Would appreciate any answers to this!
    Thanks

Nice username:D. Seriously, the dental benefits that you got with a Medical Card have been seriously curtailed. Now all you get is an examination every 2 yrs(I think). Regarding schoolgoers eligibility, they are usually picked up by the Public Dental Service. The treatment is free and usually finishes for the majority of cases, before the child is 16. For ongoing serious dental or orthodontic problems, the 16 does not apply. To get the best advice you should contact the Dental HQ of your local health service. There are/were several schemes in train at one stage, but like everything else, there has been cut-backs in dental services in the last 2 years.

    Kristopherus,thanks:D
I know that the primary are covered by the health service and once they leave(afaik) to go onto secondary that it stops. It did for mine. Just not sure about the medical card and secondary school goers.Probably best to ask my local dentist.
    Thanks

No treatment for teenagers aged 12-15 on a medical card, yet you can get it under the age of 12, or aged 16 and over!

I have a 15year old daughter, and when I tried to book her in for a check up/clean, I was told by my dentist that they only treat children on a medical card while they are in national school. Anybody that is aged 12/13/14/15 and in secondary school has to be treated as a private patient and therefore you have to pay for the treatment and it won't be provided on a medical card.

Seems a disgraceful rule if you ask me, suppose they do it because 12-15 is the likely age that a teenager would get braces fitted, if they needed them, and the government is probably terrified that they would have to pay out for it:rolleyes:
