Will prospective employers contact my current boss?

I'm after applying for a job and I'm a little worried that they will contact my current boss. Although they have stated they will not contact any referee's without my consent I'm still concerned about this possibility. My currently workplace is famous for letting people go once they know they're looking around... Actually, I'm incredibly nervous about this. What happens in this situation? I've never changed jobs when I've had one so I'm confused as to the process of moving from one into another. Any ideas/help?

We would be very conscious of this and would never contact any referee nevermind a current employer without getting the 'all clear' from a candidate. I would hope it's the same with all employers.

just put a line saying references are available on request and leave out contact details for your references. That way they won't have any contact details and they will need to contact you first of all before they try to contact references and you'll know if its ok to give them or not.

That won't work where an application form specifies names of referees. Ours do.

My one even forced you to add a relevant email address otherwise it wouldn't let you proceed with the application.

    Name: Mr Available-on Request
    Email: availableOn.Request@email.com

... however it may impact your chances of getting the job!
