A recent episode of the Genealogy Road show on the RTE player referred to extensive records held by the Rotunda Hospital. Just wondering does anyone know how extensive the records are? How far back do they go?

Afaik, they are quite extensive but it is difficult to get access to them. There was a case last year where an older man who had been adopted tried to access his own birth record to uncover his mother's name and did not succeed.

Thanks for the reply. In the context of recent lecture about BOI records being a possible substitute for census records, if the Rotunda records go back to the 19th century, they would be a very valuable resource indeed.

The Rotunda opened in 1745 and moved to its current location 12 years later. The pleasure gardens behind it (now the garden of remembrance) were opened to help fund the hospital - people paid into them.

A recent lecture in Pearse St Library on the Bank of Ireland share register as a resource for genealogy research.
