just wondering.. im booked in for nct next week ... have two minor cracks about one inch each on the windscreen.. never even considered this a prob.. but mate says nct fail straight away because i have them. they arent bad or obstructing visibility .. is he right.. i could try getting it done on insurance but hardly by next week .. do i need to cancel the test to get this sorted first.. any ideas?.. thanks

Take a look at section 10 of the NCT manual (http://www.nct.ie/pdf/nctmanual.pdf) which will give you an indication as to whether or not it would be a problem. A crack is not necessarily an automatic fail (I have a bit stone chip in the very center of the my windscreen and they said nothing about it), but depending where it is and how big it is then it might be a problem.

I think its only a visual retest if it does fail anyway, so Id say put it through and see what happens. You might want to double check that though.

You should be able to get the windscreen replaced the same day or next day at the latest once you ring.

Cracks will mostly fail as the windscreen is a structural part of the car.
