Drug Testing at Sportifs

New York Gran Fondo (a competitive sportive) is putting aside $10k in order to drug test participants.
There are prizes for KOM/QOM winners and organisers want to target cheats. Anyone with a previous ban for doping won't be allowed ride, which rules out Jan Ulrich who was apparently go to ride the event.

    Story in Velonation.

I wonder will this catch on? While drug taking for sportifs is a bit sad really, it is surely nuts to test for them?

The Grand Fondo is a race much the same way as a marathon. It would be crazy to see it at the Sean Kelly or something like that.

Are cycling Ireland entitled to test anyone who:

    1) Is riding a Sportif on a day or introductory license
    2) Is racing club cleague on a club race license

I presume they are well entitled to test A1/2/3/4's at open races, does that ever happen?

When does something stop being a "Competitive Sportive" and become a race?

Wow.. how sad someone must be in order to dope for a sportif/amateur race. (not that I condone pro racing doping, but these guys are making a living out of it).

1st, 3rd and 8th on the stage were tested on the final day of Ras Mumhan. About 50% of the UCI XC races I went to had testing (in Ireland and abroad). I was just thinking about Dan Martin's comment about one of the big stage races he did recently with no testing and we in Ireland got tested - great to see here but amazes me that there was none on his big "Eurosport" races...

Technically yes but in practice almost never.

The anti doping officer of ci nominates the races for drug testing. These are mainly national champs hence the isc caravan at sundrive most years. As rob says theoretically they could organise tests in any racing event but it aint going to happen in small races.

Also there is a registered testing pool which names the riders for out of comp testing so unless you are in receipt of funding on a pro team you can sleep asy that you wont be getting a visit

Given how I felt Sunday afternoon after spending the morning keeping up with the maniacs in our club it might be the only solution for me.

Wow...so how does one warn a moderator for suggesting something illegal?

Great to see people making light of an issue that is already present in Irish cycling.

There is research done in other sports which shows that 90% of doping is done by those who do not compete in races as such. They do it to improve Pb's and often their perception of body image!

It certainly happens in France. Just to clarify, that in France a sportive is a race for which entry is open and ungraded.

In the 2010 Midi-Pyrenees Vetrans TT champs a 67 year old rider tested positive. He was banned for 4 years.

They should test those bottles being shed at a4 races, surely some unusual substances being ingested there
