Currently I'v got an Astra but the NCT is up in June and WHEN it fails it's not going to be worth the money fixing it, so I'm starting to look at some replacements now.

Just used for regular trips to work and college, I don't really do major journeys.
I was thinking a 1.4 or 1.6 for insurance reasons but open to other suggestions.
I'm only 22 as well so I'm looking for something with a bit of style. (I was thinking a Mk4 Golf?)

Budget is 2,000.. I could push it to 2,500 but I'd rather keep that to go towards the tax.

Cars are a very personal thing - start off by getting out there and driving everything. You'll be surprised at what you like/dislike.

Youre not giving us much to go on! Personally if I had 2 grand to spend on a car then Id be looking at getting a late 90s Civic; comfortable, great looking car, quick 1.4 engine but not terribly expensive to run/tax/insure.

It really depends on your personal preferences though and what you are looking for from a car.

Well iv driven a few different cars before (Lancer,Merc c218, bmw 318 and subaru impreza). Loved the BMW but it's probably out of my price range.

Hondas are good cars. My first car is (still) a Honda Civic and it's rock solid on the road. Good to drive and never ever lets me down mechanically.

Granted, tax, petrol, insurance etc. will be about the same as in any other car but at least you can relax knowing that the likelihood of it dying on you is very slim. It'll just work.

I just don't think it's really worth it, I'd rather spend it on a newer car.
There's a good few things wrong like thermostat housing and crack seal are leaking, needs new top shock mounts. outter track rod end, reart break line is corroded and the middle exhaust is broken on the inside.

The MK4 Golf is a very elegant car.

If some folks think a MkIV Golf is stylish or elegant, then imo they need to broaden their field of view.

I actually think the Golf MKIV looks quite good in a nice colour and wheels. If you want style how about a Alfa 147?

This is way nicer than any poverty spec 2002 Golf 1.4!

Still its not a terrible amount of work. If you had all those done would you get another few years out of it? If you buy a car for 2k its probably going to need a few bits of work done to it in the near future as well
