    I think it's been posted a few times. Like most commentators around the time, the argument was based around the idea that, "It doesn't do anything new and it costs too much". What was missed was the fact that it filled a niche which no other device was doing at the time - an internet-enabled mobile device designed for multimedia consumer use. Blackberry had been doing email for years - but really only for business users - and most mobiles had done web browsing and music in some shape for at least five years, but nobody did it well until the iPhone came along.

    It was funny when the exact same argument appeared about the iPad - "It's just a big iPhone, and sure you can just buy a laptop for the same price", but once again it filled a need and created a new market for itself practically overnight.
