Ford Focus (2002) Coolant Temp Gauge

    Hi,

    I have been having issues with faulty indications on the coolant temp gauge on my 2002 Focus (1.4l Petrol). The problem is that the reading will go from the middle, then shoot up to the red, and then just as quickly return to the middle again.

    I dropped it into a Ford garage and after 2 weeks of waiting for a replacement thermostat and thermostat switch to arrive, I finally got the car back.

    After an hours driving of everything being fine, the reading once again shot up to the red line and then back down again.

    It has since done it another few times but not nearly as much as it used to before getting it looked at.

    Any ideas what this could be? I'm assuming that the chances of the replacement thermostat being faulty are pretty slim...

    Does it go into the red if you work the engine hard by accelerating sharply up through the gears or up a hill etc? Then return to normal if you back off the throttle? If so then it is something I have seen before a good few times on those Fords, the problem will be either a blocked radiator or a faulty heater valve unit.

    Hi, thanks for your reply. I haven't noticed any correlation between revs/stress on the engine and the temp gauge.

    I should have said in my original post that the garage did a general servicing and performed a pressure test before putting in 2litres of coolant. The pressure was fine - would this have been picked up by a blocked radiator?
