    Hi,
I'm in 1st year and I'm trying to decide whether or not I'll keep on Spanish next year, i was wondering if anyone who has done it could tell me a bit about it.
    Are the teachers good?
How many students would be in each class? (roughly)
Is it true that the work gets a lot harder in 2nd year?
Do many people go abroad in 3rd year?
Do you have conversation classes and listening classes also?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, how do you find the work in first year?
Do you find you're struggling with it or is it easy for you?
I took up Spanish from beginners last year, now I'm studying it in second year and i think the work is handy enough.
In second year, you have to do two compulsory modules; Grammar, exactly as it sounds, and Communication which focuses on the speaking element.
There is also an optional module.
There're about 15-20 in each class and you still have the listening classes, yeah.
As regards teachers, I think the ones that I have are good but a lot of it is about how much work you decide to put into the class.

Hope that was a help to you!

    Hi there,
Firstly there is no easy option at University regardless of what anyone else tells you. What subjects are you good at and what subjects do you really like, which ones do you find a real chore.

The teachers in 2nd year Spanish are much the same although some Lecturers may go on Sabbatical leave to study or some of the tutors might change if they are trying to finish their PhD but generally it stays the same.

Grammar SPA201-02 are split into 3 or 4 groups with roughly 15-18 in each class and students find this easier. SPA203-04 Spanish for Communication is the same in terms of numbers but you do have to attend your classes or you will definitely fall behind and no one will give you sympathy for that, you could even end up paying for grinds and that's not good!

There maybe different options of literature to study including Catalan and a possibility of Portuguese. This depends on many factors. Ask yourself if you're essay person or a language person?

In 2nd year students start to think whether or not they want to go on a year abroad, all I can say is it's highly advantageous to the student and good fun.

I suggest you speak to both the 1st year co-ordinator and the 2nd year co-ordinator regarding your queries. Also speak to the 2nd year co-ordinator they know everything about 2nd year and will help you choose.
If your interested in studying abroad students who've been away will be happy to talk to you about all the craic and of course the studying. Many students go abroad so normally you wouldn't be on your own. The 2nd year co-ordinator will know who they are and point you in the right direction.

I can't think of anything else but seriously speak to the co-ordinators and Rose in the Academic Advisory - not Eanan he hasn't a clue.

    Sophie :)

I have the same questions about second year but regarding German. I'm a first year beginner atm. At the minute I find it one of the more difficult subjects i'm studying, but its the most rewarding and most interesting too.

Anyone know what the rest of the degree entails - workload etc ?

    Thanks :)
