Just spotted this at the end of the ad

    * Please note item 7470059 has previously been on sale at €559.99.

So it might be worth waiting to see if the price drops on the 2nd of May

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

my wife has been after a table and chairs in argos and it keeps jumping from 500 odd quid to over 1000 every few days, but she keeps missing it at the lower price as you have to call them up to order it as it's a home delivery only item and every time she sees it at the lower price their call centre is already closed. :(

ah well, maybe i'll buy her a nice new telly to make her feel better. :D

Thanks mytime, I see this alright but almost all of their items were at a lower price at some point. Not sure if it's just inflation meaning things were actually cheaper at one point or what. I seen this TV on their site a few days ago and it was over €600 so...

Why the 2nd of May can I ask?! Do they drop the prices at the start of every month or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

also, i just noticed that it's only "HD Ready" though, not full HD, which means it's a 1365 x 768 LCD, not a full 1920x1080 (i.e. 1080p) one, so 720p will be upscaled and 1080p will be downscaled, and I reckon you'd really miss not having full HD on a 51" screen, assuming you intend on using a blu-ray player or other 1080p media player of some sort. :(

cos it says so on the web page next to the "previously sold at" bit. :)
    Additional Information

Current selling price valid until 01/05/2012

It's a D450, a low quality/resolution (720p) plasma from samsung. You'd be better off with a D550 which is Full HD (1080p) and better quality.

What would 1080p media be Vibe?

At home, I have a standard coaxial connection going into the current samsung 32". This gives us saorview, in HD I think. Then I also have a french TV box plugged in via scart for French TV. Finally, I have the PC connected via VGA. There is a bluray player too with HDMI plugged in but that is only for the babies cartoons.

Would I miss having HD or am I ok with what I use the TV for?

2nd of May is when the current offers end and new offers come in. THe price may and will probably rise rather then become cheaper. Although there is a slight chance that it could drop to the lower price, just dont count on it if you really want the tv, it is only 20 Euro!

you will only get hd through a hdmi connection so only your babies are benefiting from it.

No HD over coax or scart. Only VGA or HDMI in your set up.

Not worth it in my opinion.

Got a 50 lg for 649 full HD in powercity and that the dearest place ;-)

Wow, just realised the importance of correct grammar there.
    Should have originally read:
There is a bluray player too with HDMI plugged in but that is only for the baby's cartoons.

    I only have one!!!!! :D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

it depends tbh. you'll probably notice a lot more how bad the coax and scart connections look on a 51" screen compared to the 32" and you might decide you'll want to upgrade your other inputs to something a ittle crisper, such as Sky HD or start getting some blu-rays in for yourselves instead of just the baby.

you could probably find a 1080p TV for only a small bit more than that one, so it might be worth shopping around, if only to add a bit of future proofing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Schorpio

It sounds to me like his current Samsung TV is decoding Saorview via the coax - so he is getting some Rte 2 content in HD.

Personally for a 51" screen I wouldn't touch anything other than full HD, but that's just me. I reckon 720p is fine up to 32", but anything bigger than that the difference between 720 and 1080 is noticeable. Even for a future proofing point of view I'd be going for full (1080) HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭irishproduce

Correct, it is HD because I am able to swicth between digital and analogue and I can see the difference between RTE2 standard and RTE2 HD via saorview.
I will leave this T alone.
TBH, I have an argos voucher for an old sony TV that broke down and have to use so was rooting around their site this morning again and spotted that 51 inch. Thought it was a bargain (to my untrained eye) so shared it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

you can't get a HD signal down a coax cable, it's just not able for it. what you are seeing is an analogue SD downsample of the original digital HD content (converted down by your digital reciever to a lower quality signal that the coax cable can handle), so you aren't actually getting HD, just a very nice SD picture from the original HD source, which looks nicer than the original analogue RTE signal, but it's still not HD. if you had a HDMI connection from the saorview box to the TV, you'd seen an extra improvement in the picture.

it's not a bad deal by any means and if you have a voucher then its definitely going to be a bargain for you, but if you were thinking long term to watching more and more HD content in the future, it would be worth investing that little bit extra in a 1080p TV (imho).

EDIT: I mis-assumed (due to an apparent temporary lack of an ability to read english:o) it was an external saorview box with an analogue coax output to the TV, but it's actually got a built in saorview tuner.

If the Samsung 32" has a Saorview (MPEG4) tuner and if he is using that tuner to view RTE2 while it's broadcasting a HD program it is HD. Not sure why you'd think otherwise!

Of course you can. Coax isn't explicitly HD or SD, it's just a cable carrying a signal that's decoded down the line somewhere. For example, any UPC customer has RG-6 coax coming into their house which carries HD video.
The same is true with Saorview. A Saorview box (whose sole input is a coaxial cable) decodes the signal then sends it to the tv. The tv the poster was referring to clearly has a digital decoder built into the tv, which performs the exact same function as a Saorview box and would provide the same quality picture.

you've got me there, I mis-read what she was originally saying. I'd thought she had a separate saorview box with an analogue coax connection from that to the TV, I missed that it was an internal saorview decoder, so yes, you're correct. :)

I actually have this tv. Got it in the January Sales for 500 quid.

I think it's a really good tv for the money.

Regarding the 'hd ready' issue. HD broadcasts like RTEHD and Sky HD only broadcast at 720dp so 'full HD tvs have to upscale their picture while the hd ready tvs can show the true image

    2. even given the size of the tv, the 720 resolution looks really sharp

    3. You will notice that SD pictures are not so crisp but that's the same with any big screen tv trying to show SD images.

    4. The tv looks fantastic in the room, its got a really thin frame and it is surprisingly thin at the back (thinner than most non led LCD screens

    5. because its plasma, it has excellent refresh rate and excellent contrast which is great for games and movies.

I certainly recommend the television. An excellent feature is that it can play most video files straight from a USB stick without any hassle of converting to MPG.

    Ha ha ha Vibe.
I think you are assuming a lot.
I think you are incorrectly assuming I am a woman too. I have a feeling it was because I mentioned babies in a previous post. I am not a woman BTW :p

The main function will be to show Saorview. I am assuming it has an MPEG4 tuner like the current samsung I have so it should produce the same picture.
It's second function will be to carry both freesat via scart and then this box for the wife using the Viaccess Stratos box which is on the page here - http://www.elap.fr/gb/?r=4&f=1&c=2&p=3&obj=p_satrecrky - this is also via scart or composite (Strangely it has HDMI connection and wire but that doesn't produce any picture at all, only the scart brings up a picture).

Finally, the PC is connected via VGA from a DVI adaptor and the child has bluray player hooked up (Sony BDPS185 which is a useless wa**er of a thing lying about making your TV a smart TV when it doesn't even have netflix!)

So, should I bit the bullet and use my €450 voucher towards this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Schorpio

Actually, RTE Two HD on Saorview broadcasts @ 1440x1080i. On Sky - BBC HD, ITV1 HD and Luxe HD all broadcast at 1440x1080i and I think all of Sky's own HD channels broadcast @ 1920x1080i (open to correction there). Blu-Ray discs are also 1920x1080. A 720 resolution TV is likely to be upscaling a lot of the time.

There's no getting away from the fact that it's a lot of television for the money, but if you intend keeping it for a few years then personally, I'd spend a little bit more and go the full HD route. It's really up to you at the end of the day though. As the previous poster said, many people just don't notice the difference and are happy with 720. Often the best thing to do is see the TV in action before you buy. Argos often have TVs out on display, so it might be worth going down to see if this TV is out.

If you really want to make the most out of your TV, I'd also splash out on a freesat HD box :p

    Ha ha ha Vibe.
I think you are assuming a lot.
well, you know what they say about assume! :P

i ended up in power city on my way home today and they have the new samsung series 7 & tv's with a 51" series 7 staring at you as you walk in and it instantly blows you away with the ultra thin bezel and miniscule width and that's before you even see the video demo of the voice and motion control and then see the skype video calls, 3D, wifi, dnla streaming and full online experience.

if i'd had 2k in the bank it would have been sold there and then on the spot, so its a good job i'm so skint! :D

the table and chairs we were looking at in argos for €579 has gone up to nearly 1200 quid now, so we'll be holding off on that until the price comes down again. :)

Why don't you ask Argos, or search in/start a new thread in the HE Video Displays & Projectors forum.

Don't worry about the lower case alpha code - depending on the brand I think it can denote everything from sales territory, panel type or even which major retailer the unit is destined for.

Go by the model number (ps51e530) and in this case with Saorview certification confirmed, you're good to go.
