    Guys,

Just a quick query regarding the changing of a timing belt for a Volkswagen Jetta. The car is a 1.6L unleaded, has 77,000km on it. I have the car for the last 3.5 years. I was told when I got the car serviced prior to xmas that it is due a change.

I understand there is a 3 year rule, but does it apply to all cars, with belts.

It's normally 5 years or every 60k miles. You should check with your local Volkswagen dealer to clarify. Second opinion never hurt anyone

Every car make differs check your user manual something inny head is telling me that your engine is around 80k.u have quite low mileage I only finished a 06 Passat timing belt on its second timing belt change so count yourself lucky.plus sould ve very easy and cheap to do for the right mechanic.the 1.6 engine is a nice belt to do to be honest

The interval on the 2006 1.6 Jetta is every 4 years regardless of mileage. As the poster above says they are an easy belt to do. The parts are cheap as well so they whole job should only cost you around €260 if you shop around.

If in doubt just change it. Its about €250 to prevent possibly ten times that amount in damage if it goes.

Its the access to the belt, there is very little in the way of the timing belt cover so labour is less.

hmmm...Most FWD V6's are a nightmare, with the Rover 2.5 V6 and the Nissan 300zx 3.0 V6 being two I have in mind.

Easiest has to be either the old polo/ibiza 1.0-1.4 8V engines or the old 3.0 diesel landcruiser.
