Alfa timing belt ?

It's fair to say that it's well accepted that Alfa's require the timing belt replaced every 36,000 miles - my own won't be due another while yet.
My question is; just what are the symptoms of timing belt failure ? Overheating ? Noise ? Not starting ?

Not starting would be a decent indicator as they often fail at start up :)
    Overheating would be completely independent.

You might get a warning of some extra noise sometimes before the belt or tensioner lets go.

'tis 36k miles or 3 years too btw as you probably know, quite a few go before that too.

36k OR 3 years whichever comes first for the twin spark petrols. You can't rely on any warning signals at all. Change it on time or you could regret it.

The symptoms also include a rapid lightening of the wallet ;D

I know a timing chain gets rattly but I'm not sure there is anyway to tell if a timing belt is on the way out without examining it for signs of wear. They tend to just snap afaik.

Unless you are regularly removing the covers and inspecting the belt/guides/tensioner then there are no signs of impending belt failure.

The only time Ive ever seen a timing belt actually go it did so without any warning whatsoever and simply snapped when the car was driving. Change it when it needs to be changed, and err on the side of caution if in doubt.
