This will be my first summer cycling with a club and I was wondring how people got into competing in races. Wht is the best way to start? How do you train for them and should you do sportives before you begin racing?

Does your club run or take part in a club league? This is a great introduction to racing. You get the experience without the very big fields and you might even win a prize!

Otherwise, just get a racing licence and sign on for your nearest A4 race.....

Sportives are OK (sort of) for learning to ride in a group but they don't have the flat-out sprints that you get in racing. The best training is racing, in my opinion.

I'm probably not a very good example, as I stumbled into racing at a relatively late age, having being dragged along to a handful club winter evening training spins. I signed up to racing while off the bike (and on the turbo) with a broken wrist, and did my first race a couple of weeks after getting the all-clear (exactly 2 years ago on the Swords CC Ardgillan Hill climb). I did my first "proper" race a week later having never previously ridden in a group of more than about 4 or 5 riders ...

For a young rider like yourself, you really need to get involved with a club (ideally with a youth section). Get out on regular spins. Learn about riding in a group, and pick up racing tips from other club members - they'll probably be able to assess when you are ready for racing. There are some junior races put on around the country, which, along with local clib leagues, would be a good place for a younger rider to start. Sportives are fine for getting a bit of endurance, but don't really provide you with much in the way of racing skills

i only started cycling last year. and am racing this year. i done some club races. you need a club competion licence to do them, cost 80 euro. most clubs will start running there summer series in the next couple of weeks. so get a licence and go along. you will get all the information you want about proper race of the lads there.
