Crisis in Wexford Hurling?

Lads, I'm not a Wexford man so I wouldn't know the full story down there, but what is going on in Wexford with regards to hurling? I mean the current panel of players has absolutely nothing on the team that was '04 Leinster champs with the likes of Damien Fitzhenry, Rory Jacob in his peak, or the team of the '90s. They were contesting Division 1B Relegation Playoff, which says it all for me. My expectation of Wexford would be that they should be competing at the top level. Is there much work being done at underage like minor or u21 to bring the next generation on? Or are they just going through a blip like a transitional period? It looks to me that Wexford is focusing on mainly football now which is extremely disappointing. When will they be contesting for All Irelands again?

dont mean to be smart, but the rest of your post pretty much verifies that
but what is going on in Wexford with regards to hurling? I mean the current panel of players has absolutely nothing on the team that was '04 Leinster champs with the likes of Damien Fitzhenry, Rory Jacob in his peak, or the team of the '90s.

there are a number of threads on here on the same subject. Basically, instead of building on the mid 90's success, the Wexford Co board and coaching etc rested on its laurels rather than making sure improvements were being made. underage coaching etc was neglected, and club structures were abysmal.
They were contesting Division 1B Relegation Playoff, which says it all for me. My expectation of Wexford would be that they should be competing at the top level.

why? why should any team be competing at the top level? they survived relegation from Div 1 last year, but were put down anyway, and dont forget who finished in the same position the previous year. They put no emphasis whatsoever on the league, it was a training and experimental exercise with many players being used.
Is there much work being done at underage like minor or u21 to bring the next generation on? Or are they just going through a blip like a transitional period?

bit of both. plenty of work, but the main issue is that they are too focussed on winning these minor underage competitions, rather than developing players for later.
It looks to me that Wexford is focusing on mainly football now which is extremely disappointing.

that isnt the case, at all, and is very much an ill-conceived notion. anyone who knows Wexford GAA knows hurling still dominates, and football is still in the shadows, despite its relative success. Wexford will struggle to have a couple of thousand at the league final with Longford next week. I was at league games in football this year with a couple of hundred at them.
When will they be contesting for All Irelands again?
a long way away. just dont have the quality or depth. Last years minors were badly badly managed, and that was supposed to be a great crop. Players all out of position, and tactics were awful. Was a wasted opportunity. the finances arent there either. Wexford are really badly in debt.

You may have hit the nail on the head there.

PS Anyone ever wonder why every strawberry in the world appears to come from Wexford ?

Reason for the mess, its the county board. Totally neglected the hurling down there and refused to step down after the mess they made.

Kids in Wexford dont even know what a hurl is now and it isnt practise much at school level.

Now since i moved to Dublin, its the opposite, kids bringing their hurls to school, constant training in the evenings. In Wexford the ptiches are empty at 6pm, in Lucan they are packed!!

    Work it out.

Jesus lads is it that bad down there? You wouldn't even describe it as a hurling county anymore? Sounds like wexford hurling is in a bad state if kids don't even know what a hurl is! It's very sad to hear that Wexford just isn't a force as it was before in hurling, and it doesn't sound like there's much work being done to
    Change that either.

I was never in wexford, know nothing about the place apart from - it's not a hurling county anymore, they are far better at football. Hurling is also in danger in counties like Limerick.

yeah its not a hurling county. they only ever play football. I havent seen any kids playing it and it isnt played is schools. nothing is being done in underage level.

or you could read what someone from Wexford has already said.

The only thing that made sense here is you admitting you know nothing about Wexford, rest of this post is garbage.

I don't even know where Wexford is but I know for a fact Meath has a stronger hurling team.

Minor hurlers beat Dublin by 2 points today

Lads, was at the Dublin and Wexford minor match today in Parnell Park, even though I'm from Dublin(who I wasn't impressed with at all), I was really happy to see Wexford win. Hopefully this crop of minors will push on good to see them win I was delighted for them to be honest, it clearly meant a Lot to them when the final whistle went.Martin Storey and the boys must be working very hard. If I knew Dublin were to lose in the 2nd round of Leinster, I would of wanted it to be against Wexford. Well done to everyone involved. Like
I said hopefully this group can push on.
