    Hi

I am trying to use public transport from the midands to get to the airport for a 10:45am flight to NY. Its tricky. I can get a bus from Kinegad at 7:30 which arrives (per timetable) at 9:00. Now I think that is enough time as I won't be doing duty free etc. Opinions? Alternatively I can take an earlier bus but its at 4:10am which while plenty of time is a bit too early for my liking.....

would you consider coming up the night before and staying in an airport hotel? it might cost you 50/60 but will take the rushing and hassle out of it and you can get a good nights sleep. most of the hotels usually have a minibus to the airport too.

personally i think arriving at the airport 1h 45m before a flight to the u.s. is far too late. what if your bus is delayed / traffic etc?

I know....thats a good idea. I was kind of mulling over the idea of staying at an airport hotel. Very reasonable prices. The traffic is definitely a risk on a weekday...

Check-in for all long-haul flights close 60 minutes prior to departure. You also need to get through U.S. Customs and Border Protection if your flying direct so you'd be cutting it fine if there was traffic problems.

Did the same flight back in February.. got Bewley's Airport for €59 for the night I think.

    Wholeheartedly recommend doing it!

Immigration is fairly pain-free in Dublin but best be there for 8am.

Another alternative is a train from Mullingar, leaving at 6:14 and arriving at Connolly at 7:35. I think that could work allowing say 40 mins max for a shuttle or taxi to the airport.....

The midlands are poorly served for airport transportation. I wish that gobus from Galway would stop somewhere nearby!

    Thanks.

flight long enough as it is, just stay at a hotel close to dublin for the night

3 weeks ago we had a flight to atlanta leaving dublin at 10.30am, arrived in terminal 2 just after 8am and had loads of time

the 747 bus will have you to the airport in about 10 or 15 minutes and is pretty reliable as it goes down the normally quiet quays to the O2/Point and then tunnel and motorway to the airport.

that is def the way to go.

Got the 747 from Heuston to the airport last week - very quick

at airport it took 5 mins to check in a bag (United), 1 min for security (T2 is super efficient), 8 min walk to US border control - another 1 min job(but it was for an early flight and may get busy later) and then 2 mins for a second element of security screening

I agree that an early morning train to Connolly and the 747 bus to the airport is the best idea, as long as you don't mind being totally knackered for the rest of the day. If you want to arrive Stateside relaxed and refreshed without breaking the bank, there are lots of low cost budget, B&B and hostel accommodation in the Gardiner St/Talbot St/Amiens St areas. They are a stones throw from Connolly Station. Very handy for getting the 747 bus on Talbot St too.

If you decide to staying somewhere like Bewleys at Newlands Cross, don't come into town and get the 747 to the airport. You'll have to get a taxi to the Red Cow Luas stop, get the Luas to Connolly, then take the 747 bus to the airport. That will take guts of a couple of hours. It kinda defeats the purpose of coming up the night before imo. Instead, take a taxi to the Red Cow Luas stop and take the new Dublin Coach Portlaoise-Dublin Airport shuttle service out to the airport. The fare is just a fiver.

( I don't know where in midlands you are, but if you could rustle up a lift to Portlaoise, you could ride to the airport from there & not have to worry about coming into Dublin city at all)

If you do decide to take the 747 bus to the airport and time is an issue, don't get the bus at the Talbot St pick up stop across from Connolly Station. Buses that stop there still have to navigate the city centre, the quays, do a pick up at Heuston Station, then head back down the quays to Dublin Port Tunnel. Doing this in the middle of the am rush hour can slow them down, even with the benefit of bus lanes.

Instead, head toward Jurys Inn which is just down from Custom House Harbour Quay. There, you'll be able to pick up the 747 buses that have already been to town & Heuston Station, and are already on their way to the Port Tunnel. It is only a 5 minute walk from the Talbot St pick up spot. You won't be going too much out of your way and it could shave 20-30 mins off your trip to the airport over all.
