Does anyone know anything about cycling clubs in or near Portlaoise? As far as I can work out, there's Watchtours and St Peter's, both of which seem to be for prison officers. Laois CTC is listed on the Cycling Ireland club list, but their website isn't online any more.

I live in Stradbally, and it looks like the nearest clubs to me are Ossary in Rathdowney or Deenside in Castlecomer. Does anyone know of any others closer to home?

According to their website they're based in Birr. Lots of nice cycling country over there, but again, a bit far from me!

Laois CRC are still on the go since I've seen them out racing this year. I used to ride with Laois CC back in the 80's when I lived in Stradbally myself. Great place for training. Can't understand why there are not more people from Laois cycling. Carlow has a club and there's one in Castlecomer. There's a triathlon club in Portlaoise you could train with.
Are you just starting out or have you been training a while?

I've been cycling for a bit over a year now, having beeun running for about 10 years. I'm not racing, just looking for a group to keep me sportive-fit.

Laois CTC is a small club but still exists. Mainly racers but over the winter we got a number of 'touring' cyclists joining us. Look up Laois Cycling and Touring Club on FB. Sunday spins start from Portarlington (Maxol) at 9:15 and Portlaoise (Adams garage) at 9:30 but as racers are out racing, group might be small. Let me know if you want to do a spin with us and I will make sure we pick you up.

Could you try get a boards group to meet somewhere like pedigree corner some evening? I'd say there's enough in the area to try something.

I was thinking that was the next step. I'm hoping to meet up with the Laois CTC guys some Sunday, but a Boards evening spin would be a good idea as well. If anyone's intersted in this, send me a PM and we'll see if we can arrange something.

Just saw this post by fluke and just wanted to clear up something. St Peters CC isn't just for Prison Officers. I'm secretary and we have retired and serving members but also have a few civilian members. There's a spin every Sunday morning @ 10am leaving from the Kileshin hotel and from other venues by arrangement. We go as fast as slowest person, no one is left behind. Anyone is welcome to come out with us. My contact details are on the cycling ireland website. Give me a shout if you want to
